The Three Masks
''The Three Masks'' (French: ''Les trois masques'') is a 1929 French film directed by André Hugon and starring Renée Héribel, Jean Toulout and François Rozet. Produced by Pathé the film is considered to be a candidate for France's first talking picture, but was made in Britain. As no French studio had yet been converted for sound, it was shot at Twickenham Studios in London. The first talking picture produced in France is probably Pierre Colombier's ', although ''The Queen's Necklace'' produced by Pathe's rival Gaumont is also considered a contender.Lanzoni p.57 The first American sound films had premiered in Europe, followed by Alfred Hitchcock's ''Blackmail'' in 1929. André Hugon
André Hugon (17 December 1886 – 22 August 1960) was a French film director, screenwriter and film producer best known for his silent films from 1913 onwards, particularly of the 1920s and into sound. Hugon was born in Algiers in 1886 which at the time was part of France. He directed some 90 films between 1913 and 1952. Julius Hagen
Julius Hagen (1884–1940) was a German-born British film producer who produced more than a hundred films in Britain. Hagen originally worked as a salesman for Ruffels Pictures. He then worked his way up to become a production manager in the British silent film industry before becoming an independent producer in 1927. From 1928, he took control of Twickenham Studios and became one of the most prolific and successful producers of Quota quickies. He later switched to making more prestigious films, but in 1937 he was forced into bankruptcy and lost control of Twickenham. A mask is an object normally worn on the face, typically for protection, disguise, performance, or entertainment and often they have been employed for rituals and rights. Silent Film
A silent film is a film with no synchronized Sound recording and reproduction, recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of intertitle, title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a piano, pianist, theatre organ, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or musical improvisation, improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience.
