The Thirteenth Chair (1937 Film)
''The Thirteenth Chair'' is a 1937 American mystery film directed by George B. Seitz, based on the 1919 stage play by Bayard Veiller, and starring Dame May Whitty, Lewis Stone, Madge Evans, and Elissa Landi. This was the third film adaptation of the play. There was an earlier version by director Tod Browning in 1929, with Bela Lugosi in a supporting role, and an even earlier 1919 silent film adaptation that starred Creighton Hale. Plot In Calcutta, India, Scotland Yard Inspector Marney (Lewis Stone) and local police Commissioner Grimshaw (Matthew Boulton) discuss the murder of Leonard Lee as they approach the bungalow where he was stabbed in the back. Grimshaw succinctly describes the victim as “rotten”. John Wales (Henry Daniell) is inside the supposedly locked house. Lee was his best friend. Lal Chand Mehra
Lal Chand Mehra was an Indian character actor and academic active in Hollywood from the 1920s through the 1960s. Biography Mehra was born into a prominent Hindu family in Amritsar, India. He attended the University of Punjab as an undergraduate, and got his postgraduate degrees in education and philosophy at the University of California at Berkeley. In Hollywood, he worked as an actor and also as a technical director on films that called for knowledge of Indian culture and customs. He also gave lectures on Indian culture and current events throughout Southern California and on the radio. Heather Thatcher (3 September 1896 – 15 January 1987) was an English actress in theatre and films. Dancer By 1922, Thatcher was a dancer. She was especially noted for her interpretation of an Egyptian harem dance. Her exotic clothes were designed in Russia. They featured stencil slits in the waist, trouserettes and sleeves. Her attire was billed as the boldest costume ever shown in Britain. English theatre Thatcher played the feminine lead in London stage productions such as ''Oh Daddy'' and ''Warm Corner''. Charles Silas Richard Trowbridge (January 10, 1882 – October 30, 1967) was an American film actor. He appeared in more than 230 films between 1915 and 1958. Thomas Beck (December 29, 1909 – September 23, 1995) was an American film and stage actor during the mid to late 1930s, who first attracted attention playing juvenile leads in several Charlie Chan and Mr. Moto films. Early life Born in New York City, Beck entered college with the intention of becoming a doctor but abandoned that for engineering. Ralph Forbes (born Ralph Forbes Taylor; 30 September 1904 – 31 March 1951) was an English film and stage actor active in Britain and the United States. Early life Forbes was born in Wandsworth, London, the son of Ernest John "E.J." and Ethel Louise Taylor. His mother would become known as Mary Forbes, a stage and film actress. His younger sister was actress Brenda Forbes (born Dorothy Brenda Taylor).
