The Test (play)
''The Test'' is the English-language translation of Swiss playwright Lukas Bärfuss' 2007 play ''Die Probe (Der brave Simon Korach).'' Themes of the play include family, paternity and identity. The translation was first staged in Toronto by The Company Theatre (TCT) in association with Canadian Stage in 2011. According to Christopher Hoile of ''Stage Door'', ''The Test'' paints "the frightening image of the older generation so self-obsessed with creating a 'legacy' that it has driven away anyone who could possible carry it on." World Premiere The English translation of Bärfuss' ''Die Probe'' had its world premiere on the Berkley Street Theatre Stage in Toronto in January 2011. Lukas Bärfuss
Lukas Bärfuss (born 30 December 1971) is a Swiss writer and playwright who writes in German. He won the Georg Büchner Prize in 2019. Biography Born in Thun, Switzerland in 1971, Lukas Bärfuss began training as a bookseller after graduating from high school. In 1998, he co-founded the independent theater group 400asa. Awards Bärfuss has won the Mülheimer Dramatikerpreis in 2005 for the play ''Der Bus (Das Zeug einer Heiligen)'', the Anna Seghers-Preis in 2008, the Hans Fallada Prize in 2010, the Solothurner Literaturpreis in 2014, the Swiss Book Prize (german: link=no, Schweizer Buchpreis) in 2014 for ''Koala'', the Nicolas Born Prize in 2015 and the Johann-Peter-Hebel-Preis in 2016. The Company Theatre
The Company Theatre is a Toronto-based independent theatre company that produces provocative international plays with Canada's best actors. A Whistle In The Dark
''A Whistle in the Dark'' is a play by Tom Murphy that premiered on September 11, 1961 at the Joan Littlewood's Theatre Royal, Stratford East, London, having been rejected by the Abbey Theatre, Dublin. It then went on to be a West End hit. Murphy was twenty-five years old at the time. The play tells the story in three acts of the climactic confrontation between Michael, the oldest of the Carney sons, and his father and brothers, a brawling, hard-drinking, criminal gang of Irish immigrants living and working in Coventry. A powerful portrayal of tribal violence and the devastation it brings in its wake in spite of attempts to stand against it, it remains Murphy's best known and most performed play. ''Festen'' is a British stage adaptation of the 1998 Danish Festen, film of the same name (''The Celebration'' being the film's release title in North America). The adaptation is by English playwright David Eldridge (dramatist), David Eldridge. It was first staged in 2004 by producer Marla Rubin at the Almeida Theatre in London, and has since been staged in many countries around the world. Synopsis As in the original movie, ''Festen'' satirises the hypocrisy of a large and wealthy family by observing the events that unfold at the ancestral home during a reunion held to celebrate the oldest family member's 60th birthday. As the time arises for birthday speeches to be made to the party's subject, one of his sons stands and asks the assembled guests to choose which of two prepared speeches he should read. ''Through the Leaves'' is a 1976 play from German playwright, actor and film director Franz Xaver Kroetz. Developed from one of Kroetz' earlier pieces, ''Men's Business,'' ''Through the Leaves'' premiered in 1981. Critics have described the play as "not pleasant," with Frank Rich of ''The New York Times'' going on to write that "it sticks in the mind" in his 1984 review. In 2010, Naomi Skwama of Toronto's '' NOW Magazine'' described the play as "absorbing, but nearly unbearable in its intimacy – offering the sick pleasure that comes from reading a stranger’s diary." Eric Neal Peterson (born October 2, 1946) is a Canadian stage, television, and film actor, known for his roles in three major Canadian series – '' Street Legal'' (1987–1994), ''Corner Gas'' (2004–2009), and '' This is Wonderland'' (2004–2006), as well as ''Corner Gas Animated'' (2018–2021).
