''The Tenants'' is a 2005 film drama directed by Danny Green and starring Dylan McDermott and Snoop Dogg. It is based on the 1971 novel ''The Tenants (novel), The Tenants'' by Bernard Malamud. Premise In an abandoned tenement, a militant African-American writer and a Jewish novelist develop a friendship while struggling to complete their novels before the landlord forceably evicts them, but interpersonal tensions rise between the tenants and escalate into violence. David Diamond (screenwriter)
David Diamond is an American screenwriter. He frequently collaborates with David Weissman. Early life Diamond was born on April 19, 1965, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Diamond and Weissman met in high school, at Akiba Hebrew Academy (now Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy). They graduated in 1983. Career The duo sold their first spec script, ''The Whiz Kid'', to 20th Century Fox in 1994. Their first produced project came in 2000, ''The Family Man'' starring Nicolas Cage and Tea Leoni. Cage's production company, Saturn Films, helped produce the film. Bernard Malamud (April 26, 1914 – March 18, 1986) was an American novelist and short story writer. Along with Saul Bellow, Joseph Heller, and Philip Roth, he was one of the best known American Jewish authors of the 20th century. His baseball novel, ''The Natural'', was adapted into a 1984 film starring Robert Redford. His 1966 novel '' The Fixer'' (also filmed), about antisemitism in the Russian Empire, won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. ''The Tenants'' is the sixth novel of Bernard Malamud, published in 1971 in literature, 1971. Background Malamud began the initial composition of the novel in 1969 and completed it in 1971. Its plot concerns a rivalry between two writers—one of them a Jew and the other an African-American— who are the last two persons remaining in a soon to be condemned apartment building. Before Malamud began writing this novel, he'd already "published two short stories treating relationships between blacks and Jews": "Angel Levine" (1955) and "Black Is My Favorite Color" (1963). And in at least one other story, "The Mourners" (1955), he had examined the fraught relationship between a tenant and a landlord.
