The Summer House Sessions
''The Summer House Sessions'' is a live album by trumpeter Don Cherry. It was recorded in July 1968 at the summer home of musician and recording engineer Göran Frees in Kummelnäs, Nacka, Sweden, after Frees invited Cherry to visit for a series of jam sessions and rehearsals. (Frees would later record Cherry's ''Organic Music Society'' (1972) and '' Eternal Now'' (1974).) On the album, which was released on LP and CD in 2021 by Blank Forms Editions with cover art by Cherry's wife Moki, Cherry blended members of two of his ensembles. From the Swedish band that recorded the album '' Live in Stockholm'' appear saxophonists Bernt Rosengren and Tommy Koverhult, bassist Torbjörn Hultcrantz, and drummer Leif Wennerström, while from Cherry's international group New York Total Music Company appear bassist Kent Carter and drummer Jacques Thollot. Don Cherry (trumpeter)
Donald Eugene Cherry (November 18, 1936 – October 19, 1995) was an American jazz trumpeter. Cherry had a long association with free jazz saxophonist Ornette Coleman, which began in the late 1950s. He also performed alongside musicians such as John Coltrane, Charlie Haden, Sun Ra, Ed Blackwell, the New York Contemporary Five, and Albert Ayler. In the 1970s, Cherry became a pioneer in world fusion music, drawing on traditional African, Middle Eastern, and Hindustani music. He was a member of the ECM group Codona, along with percussionist Naná Vasconcelos and sitar and tabla player Collin Walcott. AllMusic called him "one of the most influential jazz musicians of the late 20th century." Symphony For Improvisers
''Symphony for Improvisers'' is an album by Don Cherry featuring Gato Barbieri, Henry Grimes, and Ed Blackwell, all of whom appeared on Cherry's previous album ''Complete Communion'', along with Karl Berger, Jean-François Jenny-Clark, and Pharoah Sanders. The album was recorded in 1966 and released on the Blue Note label. The front cover photograph was taken at New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Upper West Side, New York City. The tracks on ''Symphony for Improvisers'' were included in the compilation ''The Complete Blue Note Recordings of Don Cherry''. In 2021, the Ezz-thetics label reissued ''Symphony For Improvisers'' along with ''Complete Communion'' on the compilation ''Complete Communion & Symphony For Improvisers Revisited''. Ornette Coleman
Randolph Denard Ornette Coleman (March 9, 1930 – June 11, 2015) was an American jazz saxophonist, violinist, trumpeter, and composer known as a principal founder of the free jazz genre, a term derived from his 1960 album '' Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation''. His pioneering performances often abandoned the chordal and harmony-based structure found in bebop, instead emphasizing a jarring and avant-garde approach to improvisation. AllMusic called him "one of the most important (and controversial) innovators of the jazz avant-garde". Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Coleman began his musical career playing in local R&B and bebop groups, and eventually formed his own group in Los Angeles featuring members such as Ed Blackwell, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Billy Higgins. Charles Brackeen
Charles Brackeen (born March 13, 1940 in Eufaula, Oklahoma, United States; died November 5, 2021, Carson, California) was an American jazz saxophonist who primarily played tenor saxophone, but also played soprano saxophone. He was previously married to pianist Joanne Brackeen, with whom he had four children. Brackeen originally studied violin and piano before switching to saxophone at the age of 10. He played in a recording with members of the Ornette Coleman Quartet in 1968 and on Jazz Composer's Orchestra recordings by Don Cherry (1973), Leroy Jenkins (1975), and Paul Motian for ECM (1978 and 1979). He recorded again as a leader in 1987, when he recorded three albums for Silkheart Records. ''Aquarium Drunkard'' is an online music magazine launched in 2005 by Justin Gage, and based in Los Angeles, California. The name "Aquarium Drunkard" is a play on a lyric by the band Wilco. The website was originally created by Gage to share music with friends, but by 2006 the site was being read by a worldwide audience. In 2009, in an essay for ''The Observers ''Music Monthly'' supplement, Nick Hornby, author of '' High Fidelity'', listed ''Aquarium Drunkard'' among his six favorite music blogs. Reception The AllMusic review by Steve Huey states: "''Where Is Brooklyn?'' is much more about energy and thoughtful group interaction than memorable themes, and so there's just a little something missing in comparison to Cherry's prior albums, even though they did also emphasize the qualities on display here. Nonetheless, it's still a fine record for what it does concentrate on; Sanders is in typically passionate form, and the rest of the ensemble members have already honed their interplay to a pretty sharp edge.
