The Stranger On The Bridge
''The Stranger on the Bridge'' is a 2015 documentary film, produced and directed by Sam Forsdike and Richard Bentley of Postcard Productions. It was shown on Channel 4 on 4 May 2014. It is an adaptation of a promotional film made in 2014 for the charity Rethink Mental Illness called ''Finding Mike''. Synopsis The documentary follows 26 year old Jonny Benjamin as he tries to find the man who dissuaded him from taking his own life by jumping from Waterloo Bridge in London in 2008. Benjamin had nicknamed the man 'Mike', since he was not able to remember his actual name. Reception The reception for ''Stranger on the Bridge'' was largely positive receiving reviews in ''The Guardian'', ''The Daily Telegraph'' and ''The Independent''. The '' Radio Times'' called it a “remarkable, joyous, painful and ultimately life-affirming film”. Rethink Mental Illness
Rethink Mental Illness is a mental health charity in England. The organisation was founded in 1972 by John Pringle whose son was diagnosed with schizophrenia. The operating name of 'Rethink' was adopted in 2002, and expanded to 'Rethink' Mental Illness' (to be more self-explanatory) in 2011, but the charity remains registered as the National Schizophrenia Fellowship, although it no longer focuses only on schizophrenia.Gareth JonesRethink rebrands to clarify its role 19 September 2011. Jonny Benjamin
Jonny Benjamin MBE (born 1987) is a British mental health campaigner, author and vlogger. In January 2014 he launched a social media campaign called Find 'Mike' to search for a stranger who had talked him out of taking his own life in 2008. The purpose of the campaign was to raise awareness of suicide and mental illness. It went viral and received global media attention. Within just two weeks Jonny found the stranger he was looking for, Neil Laybourn. The story of the campaign was made into a documentary film, ''The Stranger on the Bridge'', that was released in May 2014. Background Jonny Benjamin began having mental health problems at a young age and his parents first took him to see a psychologist at the age of 5. The Grierson Awards are awards set up by The Grierson Trust to recognise innovative and exciting documentary films, created to commemorate the life and work of the pioneering Scottish documentary filmmaker John Grierson.
