Bruno Villela Barreto Borges (born 16 March 1955) is a Brazilian film director. Biography Born in Rio de Janeiro, Barreto has been making feature-length films ever since he was 17 years old and remains one of Brazil's most accomplished and popular directors to this day. His films vary widely, from light comedies like ''Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands'' (1976) and '' Bossa Nova'' (2000) to tense political thrillers like ''Four Days in September'' (1997). ''Four Days in September'' was entered into the 47th Berlin International Film Festival. His 1973 film '' Tati'' was entered into the 8th Moscow International Film Festival. The award is handed out annually by the United States-based Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature length motion picture produced outside the U.S. that contains primarily non-English language dialogue. This is a list of submissions to the 61st Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour non-English-speaking films produced outside the United States. The award is handed out annually, and is accepted by the winning film's director, although it is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole. Countries are invited by the Academy to submit their best films for competition according to strict rules, with only one film being accepted from each country.
