The Standby Program
The Standby Program is a non-profit, video post-production service organization in New York City. Since 1983, Standby has provided editorial services to independent film and video producers on a wide range of projects, including documentaries, video art, installations, sound mixes, film-to-tape transfers and video preservation. History Alex Roshuk and Rick Feist, film students at Princeton University, started the program at Matrix, a large video studio on Eleventh Avenue and West 52nd Street. Feist began working there as a tape operator and suggested to the owners that they offer online editing to artists on the weekends and late at night at reduced rates on a standby basis (hence the name). Matrix had three large video studios with blue screen, three online video suites, a tape library and production office space. (Today it is home to Comedy Central's ''The Daily Show''.) Edin Velez
Edin Velez is a Puerto Rican video artist, director and professor. He is best known for his work on the documentary films ''State of Rest and Motion'' and ''Dance of Darkness''. Life and career Edin was born and raised in Puerto Rico and is currently based in New York. He studied painting at the University of Puerto Rico and the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture. He moved to the US in the early 1970s and became part of the first generation of video artists working in SoHo, Manhattan. His directorial debut documentary film on Japanese Butoh, ''Dance of Darkness'', was broadcast nationally in the US by PBS. Raindance Foundation
Raindance Foundation (RainDance Corporation) was founded in October 1969 by Frank Gillette, Paul Ryan, Michael Shamberg, Louis Jaffe, and Marco Vassi. Raindance was a self-described "alternate culture think-tank" that embraced video as an alternative form of cultural communication. The name "RainDance Corporation" was an ironic reference to the mainstream organization Rand Corporation. Influenced by the communications theories of Marshall McLuhan and Buckminster Fuller, the collective produced a data bank of tapes and writings that explored the relation of cybernetics, media, and ecology. Kathy High
Kathryn High (born 1954) is an American interdisciplinary artist, curator, and scholar known for her work in BioArt, video art and performance art. Background Kathy High graduated with a BA from Colgate University in 1976 and an MAH from the Center for Media Studies at University at Buffalo in 1981 where she studied with media pioneers Tony Conrad, Hollis Frampton, and Steina Vasulka . Jem Alan Cohen (born 1962) is an Afghan-born American filmmaker based in New York City. Cohen is especially known for his observational portraits of urban landscapes, blending of media formats ( sixteen-millimetre, Super 8, videotape) and collaborations with musicians. He is the recipient of the Independent Spirit Award for feature filmmaking. Gretchen Bender (1951 in Seaford, Delaware – 2004 in New York City) was an American artist who worked in film, video, and photography. She was from the so-called 1980s Pictures Generation of artists, which included Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo, Jack Goldstein, Laurie Simmons and Richard Prince, and who mixed elements of Conceptual Art and Pop Art using images from popular culture to examine its powerful codes. Alex Roshuk
Alex Roshuk (July 14, 1956 – November 9, 2014) was an American attorney who was the first legal advisor to the Wikimedia Foundation. He was also an electrician and worked in the entertainment industry as a director and editor. Roshuk was born in New York City and went to Catholic school. He practiced law in New York beginning in 1998 and from 2003 to 2005 was the first legal advisor to the Wikimedia Foundation. Roshuk wrote a 1,300-word summary of arbitration and mediation modes of legal dispute resolution that became the basis for the Wikipedia Arbitration Committee.
