''The Staircase'' (german: Die Treppe) is a 1950 West German drama film directed by Alfred Braun and (uncredited) Wolfgang Staudte, and starring Hilde Körber, Herbert Stass and Paul Westermeier.Bock & Bergfelder p. 315 It was partly shot at the Wiesbaden Studios in Hesse. Tenement
A tenement is a type of building shared by multiple dwellings, typically with flats or apartments on each floor and with shared entrance stairway access. They are common on the British Isles, particularly in Scotland. In the medieval Old Town, in Edinburgh, tenements were developed with each apartment treated as a separate house, built on top of each other (such as Gladstone's Land). Over hundreds of years, custom grew to become law concerning maintenance and repairs, as first formally discussed in Stair's 1681 writings on Scots property law. In Scotland, these are now governed by the Tenements Act, which replaced the old Law of the Tenement and created a new system of common ownership and procedures concerning repairs and maintenance of tenements. Tenements with one or two room flats provided popular rented accommodation for workers, but in some inner-city areas, overcrowding and maintenance problems led to shanty towns, which have been cleared and redeveloped. Renate Brausewetter
Renate Brausewetter (1 October 1905 – 20 August 2006) was a Spain, Spanish-born Germany, German silent film actress. She was the younger sister of German actor Hans Brausewetter. Brausewetter was born in Málaga, Spain, moving to Berlin, Germany in 1915. She made her screen debut in 1925's ''Die freudlose Gasse'' (''The Joyless Street''), appearing alongside Greta Garbo. Brausewetter appeared in over a dozen silent films, but retired from acting in 1928 before the advent of sound. She appeared in only one sound picture, 1950's ''The Staircase (1950 film), The Staircase''. Brausewetter was living in a retirement home in Linz am Rhein when she died of natural causes on 20 August 2006, aged 100. Nicolas Koline (1878–1973) was a Russian stage and film actor. He established himself in Russia as a stage performer with the Moscow Art Theatre. He emigrated from Russia after the October Revolution of 1917 and came to France with La Chauve-Souris cabaret run by Nikita Balieff. In Paris he then joined Joseph Ermolieff's film company at Montreuil. Blandine Ebinger (born Blandine Loeser) (4 November 1899, in Berlin – 25 December 1993, in Berlin) was a German actress and ''chansonniere''. Career Ebinger became acquainted with Friedrich Hollaender in 1919, and with him she became heavily invested as a performer, writer, and composer in the Berlin cabaret scene in the 1920s, beginning in the cabaret and the Café des Westens.
