The Spy (1917 American Film)
''The Spy'' is a 1917 American silent thriller film directed by Richard Stanton and starring Dustin Farnum, Winifred Kingston, and William Burress.Solomon p. 241 It portrays the actions of American spy who travels to Germany during World War I to get hold of a list of German agents active in the United States. He succeeds with the help of a local woman who falls in love with him, but both are captured and executed. Although the original production ran for 8 reels, it was sometimes reduced to six in certain regions probably due to censorship of some scenes. In Chicago it was banned due to scenes of graphic violence. Richard Stanton
Richard Stanton (October 8, 1876 – May 22, 1956) was an American actor and director of the silent era. He appeared in 68 films between 1911 and 1916. He also directed 57 films between 1914 and 1925. He was born in Iowa and died in Los Angeles, California. Stanton was described as a "handsome, musical fellow", but was also a capable pugilist, demonstrating his boxing skills to two other fighters he worked with in a film. Howard Gaye
Howard Gaye (23 May 1878 – 26 December 1955) was a British actor who worked mainly in the United States. He acted in 27 silent films, including D. W. Griffith's epics ''The Birth of a Nation'' (1915) as Robert E. Lee and ''Intolerance'' (1916) as Jesus Christ. Gaye also directed films for Mena. In the early 1920s, Gaye taught acting at the Howard Gaye Studio of Screen Acting Technique. He said that even experienced stage actors needed to learn certain techniques if they wanted to adapt to acting in films. Mann was charged with violating the Mann Act in May 1923. A federal complaint charged that he took "Fanchon Duncan, said to be a movie-struck girl" to England, brought her back to the United States, and then deserted her. He was released under $2,500 bond. William Lowry, PC (NI), KC (19 March 1884 – 14 December 1949), was a Northern Irish barrister, judge, Ulster Unionist Party Member of Parliament, and Attorney General for Northern Ireland Career Born in Limavady, he was educated at Foyle College, Derry, and Queen's University Belfast.
