The Specialist
''The Specialist'' is a 1994 American action thriller film directed by Luis Llosa and starring Sylvester Stallone, Sharon Stone, James Woods, Eric Roberts, and Rod Steiger. It is loosely based on "The Specialist" series of novels by John Shirley. The film met with negative critical response, but became a box office success, and Gloria Estefan's version of "Turn the Beat Around" became a dance sensation. Plot In 1984, Captain Ray Quick and Colonel Ned Trent, explosives experts working for the CIA, are on a mission to blow up a car transporting a South American drug dealer. But when the car appears, a little girl is inside with the dealer. Ray insists they abort the mission, but Ned intends to see it through and allows the explosion to happen, resulting in the deaths of both the drug dealer and the child. Luis Llosa Urquidi (born 1951) is a Peruvian film director. He is best known for ''Sniper (1993 film), Sniper'', ''The Specialist'', and ''Anaconda (film), Anaconda''. Career Luis Llosa was originally a film critic. He is known for his early Peruvian work, English-language exploitation films made for producer Roger Corman, and bigger-budget American films. His best-known film, ''Anaconda (film), Anaconda'', stars Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, and Eric Stoltz. ''Anaconda'' was nominated for multiple Razzie Awards, including worst director, but grossed $136 million worldwide and became a cult film. "Turn the Beat Around" is a disco song written by Gerald Jackson and Peter Jackson, and performed by American actress and singer Vicki Sue Robinson in 1976 (see 1976 in music), originally appearing on her debut album, '' Never Gonna Let You Go'' (1976). Released as a single, the song went to #10 on the ''Billboard'' pop charts, and #73 on the ''Billboard'' soul chart. The song earned Robinson a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. The track also went to number one on the ''Billboard'' disco chart for four weeks.
