The Soldier (poem)
"The Soldier" is a poem written by Rupert Brooke. The poem is the fifth in a series of poems entitled ''1914''. It was published in 1915 in the book ''1914 and Other Poems''. It is often contrasted with Wilfred Owen's 1917 antiwar poem "Dulce et Decorum est". The manuscript is located at King's College, Cambridge. Structure of the poem Written with fourteen lines in a Petrarchan/Italian sonnet form, the poem is divided into an opening octet, and then followed by a concluding sestet. As far as rhyme scheme, the octet is rhymed after the Shakespearean/Elizabethan (ABAB CDCD) form, while the sestet follows the Petrarchan/Italian (EFG EFG) form. The volta, the shift or point of dramatic change, occurs after the fourth line where Brooke goes from describing the death of the soldier, to his life accomplishments winning of the First World War in 1914, as part of a series of sonnets written by Rupert Brooke. Soldier From Tomorrow
"Soldier From Tomorrow" (later reprinted under the title "Soldier") is a 1957 science fiction short story by Harlan Ellison, originally published in ''Fantastic Universe'' in October 1957. Its protagonist is Qarlo Clobregnny, a soldier from thousands of years in the future, who has been conditioned from birth by the State (the "Tri-Continenters") solely to fight and kill the enemy (the "Ruskie-Chinks"). After time traveling to the present, Qarlo is "civilized" by Lyle Sims, a government agent, and Soames, a philologist, and eventually goes on a lecture tour to warn of the coming armageddon. Ellison loosely adapted the story for his script for the 1964 '' The Outer Limits'' episode "Soldier". Ellison was later to bring suit against '' The Terminator'' production company Hemdale and distributor Orion Pictures for plagiarism of his works. ''Soldier'' is a 1998 Indian Hindi-language action thriller film directed by Abbas–Mustan starring Bobby Deol, Preity Zinta and Raakhee Gulzar. This was the first of several films where Deol collaborated with Abbas–Mustan. Although ''Soldier'' was Preity Zinta's first film, Mani Ratnam's '' Dil Se..'' ended up being released before ''Soldier'' and was thus Zinta's film debut. A soldato or soldier is the first official level of both the American Mafia and the Sicilian Mafia in the formal Mafia hierarchy or cadre. It is also commonly used as a rank in other Italian criminal organizations, such as the 'Ndrangheta and Camorra. The promotion to the rank of soldier is an elevation in the chain of command from the associate level. The associate, who is not an initiated member of the Mafia, must prove himself to the family and take the oath of Omertà in order to become an initiated made man and therefore rise to the rank of soldato. Picciotto (plural: ''picciotti'') is often used to refer to a lower-level mafioso or soldato, but it usually indicates a younger, inexperienced soldato and may even be used loosely to refer to a closely connected, up-and-coming associate who is not necessarily a made man yet (and therefore not yet officially a "soldato").
