''The Singles '82–88 is a three-CD box set containing the first twelve singles by the British neo-progressive rock band Marillion, all from the period they were fronted by Fish. It was released by EMI Records on 16 October 2009. The musical contents is identical to the 2000 box set of the same title, which contained 12 individually packaged CD singles in "replica" mini-slip covers, each with the original cover art by Mark Wilkinson. This set re-uses a part of Wilkinson's contribution to the 1995 compilation '' The Best of Both Worlds'' for its front cover. All B-sides that appeared on various formats of the original singles have been included. Marillion
Marillion are a British rock music, rock band, formed in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, in 1979. They emerged from the post-punk music scene in Britain and existed as a bridge between the styles of punk rock and classic progressive rock, becoming the most commercially successful neo-progressive rock band of the 1980s. Marillion's recorded studio output since 1982 is composed of twenty albums and generally regarded in two distinct eras, delineated by the departure of original lead singer Fish (singer), Fish in late 1988 and the subsequent arrival of replacement Steve Hogarth in early 1989. Market Square Heroes
"Market Square Heroes" is the debut single by the British neo-progressive rock band Marillion, released in 1982 with "Three Boats Down from the Candy" as the B-side. The 12-inch single included an additional track, the 17:15-minute-long "Grendel", making it an EP in terms of overall length. Themes The A-side is an anthemic rock song whose lyric vaguely describes the rise of civil unrest under some charismatic leader in the face of increasing unemployment; the original title was " UB 2,000,001". According to Marillion's singer and lyricist Fish, the "market square hero" is a "would-be revolutionary with all the necessary charisma and presence of a leader without direction or goals, just a sense of frustration and anger". Sugar Mice
Sugar mice are a traditional sugar candy popular in the United Kingdom, especially during the Christmas season. They traditionally consist of a boiled fondant formed from sugar and water. A modern non-cooked variation for children to make at home involves instead using icing sugar, egg whites and golden syrup. Various flavourings, flavours and matching food dyes can be added (such as pink for strawberry or raspberry flavour, yellow or green for lemon, yellow or white for vanilla, orange for Orange (fruit), orange flavour, etc.). Small portions of the mass are formed into a mouse-like shape and decorated with a "tail" (traditionally cotton, although edible materials such as licorice may be used). "Kayleigh" is a song by the British neo-progressive rock band Marillion. It was released as the first single from the concept album '' Misplaced Childhood''. It was the band's most successful single in the UK, where it peaked at number-two and stayed on the chart for a total of 14 weeks. "Punch and Judy" is a song by the British neo-progressive rock band Marillion. It was the first single from their second studio album '' Fugazi''. The lyrics of the song are about a marriage gone bad. The single reached no. 29 on the UK Singles Chart in February 1984. This was the only single during the band's EMI years that no music video was shot for. He Knows You Know
"He Knows You Know" is a song by the British neo-progressive rock band Marillion. It was their second single, with "Charting the Single" as the B-side. It was released from their first album, ''Script for a Jester's Tear'', and peaked at number 35 on the UK Singles Chart. The song's theme is drug abuse, and alludes particularly to intravenous drug use. In concert, lead vocalist Fish would often introduce it as "The Drug Song" and state that it was inspired by drug use while he was working at the Job/Benefits centre in Aylesbury. As with all Marillion songs during this period, the lyrics were written by Fish. The music video for this song features Fish struggling in a straitjacket having visions of a Jackson's Chameleon as featured on the album artwork of Marillion's first three albums. The Best Of Both Worlds (Marillion Album)
''Best of Both Worlds '' is a two-disc compilation album by British neo-progressive rock band Marillion released in 1997 by EMI Records, who the band had been signed to from their debut in 1982 until being dropped in 1995. The title refers to Marillion's two distinct "eras" with lead singers Fish (1980—1988) and Steve Hogarth (since 1989). By the time this compilation was released, both line-ups had recorded four studio albums each. The second best-of since the 14-track one-disc compilation '' A Singles Collection'' (known as ''Six of One, Half a Dozen of the Other ''in the US) from 1992, this one additionally contains material from '' Brave ''(1994) and '' Afraid of Sunlight'' (1996). Neo-progressive rock (also known as neo-prog) is a genre, subgenre of progressive rock which developed in the UK in the early 1980s. Mark Wilkinson
Mark Wilkinson (born 3 October 1952) is an English illustrator. He is best known for the detailed surrealistic cover art he created for a number of British bands. Wilkinson's breakthrough came through his association with the neo-progressive rock band Marillion in the 1980s. He went on to design art for the subsequent solo career of their lead singer, Fish, as well as bands such as Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Though versed in a number of techniques, he is considered to be a master of the airbrush. In 2012, his sleeve for the 1984 Marillion album ''Fugazi'' was chosen by Gigwise as the 29th greatest album artwork of all time. In 2015, Wilkinson designed the artwork for the Tya Brewery in Øvre Årdal, Norway.
