The Silent Voice (film)
''The Silent Voice'' is a six-reel silent film melodrama produced in 1915 by Quality Pictures and distributed by Metro Pictures. The motion picture was directed by William J. Bowman and was adapted from the Jules Eckert Goodman play '' The Silent Voice'' by I. K. Freedman and Eve Unsell. Goodman’s play, that originally starred Otis Skinner, was based on the Gouverneur Morris short story, ''The Man Who Played God'' which also served as the geneses for the 1932 film '' The Man Who Played God'' and the 1955 Liberace vehicle, '' Sincerely Yours''. ''The Silent Voice'' was released on September 13, 1915 with Francis X. Bushman and Marguerite Snow in the principal roles. Plot The film tells the story of Franklyn Starr, a gifted musician who becomes embittered after he is stricken with a sudden onslaught of deafness and then suffers the loss of his beloved mother. William Bowman (director)
William J. Bowman (sometimes cited William J. Bauman; February 27, 1884 – January 1, 1960) was an American stage and film actor, writer, and director noted for his work in the early 1900s on silent productions for studios in New York, New Jersey, Chicago, and in Los Angeles during the first decade of filmmaking in and around Hollywood. His direction of a series of films with matinee idol Francis X. Bushman in 1915 and his direction of the serials '' The Invisible Hand'' in 1920 and ''The Avenging Arrow'' in 1921 form only a small part of Bowman's extensive filmography. William J. William Clifford (actor)
William Clifford (1878 – December 23, 1941) was an American actor and screenwriter of the silent era. He appeared in 170 films between 1910 and 1929. He also wrote for 30 films between 1913 and 1919. Clifford was born in New Orleans in 1878, and he was educated in voice and music in Toronto, Canada. Early in his career, Clifford acted on stage as a supporting player for 18 years before he formed his own repertory company that toured the United States. He also was the leading man in Earnest Shipman's ''Prisoner of Zenda'' company. He died in Los Angeles, California. For this list of lost films, a lost film is defined as one of which no part of a print is known to have survived. For films in which any portion of the footage remains (including trailers), see List of incomplete or partially lost films. Reasons for loss Films may go missing for a number of reasons. One major contributing factor is the common use of nitrate film until the early 1950s. This type of film is highly flammable, and there have been several devastating fires, such as the Universal Pictures fire in 1924, the 1937 Fox vault fire and the 1965 MGM vault fire. Black-and-white film prints judged to be otherwise worthless were sometimes incinerated to salvage the meager scrap value of the silver image particles in their emulsions. Films have disappeared when production companies went bankrupt. Occasionally, a studio would remake a film and destroy the earlier version.
