The Sick-Leaves
The Sick-Leaves is the solo project of Eksteen Jacobsz, an alternative rock artist from South Africa. Jacobsz is the songwriter, guitarist, vocalist and bassist for the act. Early life Jacobsz grew up in Ermelo, Mpumalanga, South Africa. He started taking piano lessons when he was 11, but stopped after a year. He started playing guitar at boarding school aged 17, initially taught by his roommate, who had a guitar. Today Jacobsz plays guitar right-handed although he is left-handed. In 2002, after receiving a degree in Investment Management, Jacobsz moved to London. He came into contact with his fellow band members through music ads on Denmark Street, forming a band called The Infidels. The band toured around London for two years with Jacobsz as the vocalist, before his visa ran out and he decided to return to South Africa and start his own project with more control over the songwriting. Ermelo, Mpumalanga
Ermelo () is the educational, industrial and commercial town of the 7,750 km2 Gert Sibande District Municipality in Mpumalanga province, Republic of South Africa. It is both a mixed agriculture and mining region. It is located 210 km east of Johannesburg. History Some of the earliest inhabitants of the area were the Leghoya people. Not much is known about them, but ruins of their settlements dating back to c.1400 can be found in the area. During the mid-1800s, the area prior to the formation as a village, was an ''outspan'' area for resting teams of draw animals transporting goods across the region mainly due to the water of the small lakes dotting the area. Modern Ermelo was founded by Dutch Reformed Church Reverend Frans Lion Cachet (1835–1899). He would minister to the many farms in the area. Vuzu
Vuzu was a South African youth-oriented television channel produced by M-Net for sister pay television platform DStv. History The channel launched on 1 August 2003 as "go", as a competitor to MTV. In March 2009, it was announced that the channel would be rebranded as Vuzu on 1 July 2009, tying into an attempted social network of the same name. The network also switched its programming schedule and discontinued some shows, to the complaint of some viewers. In 2014, a companion channel, Vuzu Amp, replaced M-Net Series, which took its current name of 1Magic on 29 January 2018 with a more localized schedule. Vuzu's schedule changed at the start of September 2018, along with its logo, focusing on more high-profile American sitcoms and dramas, with some local content. MTV BASE
MTV Base was a British pay television music channel from Paramount Networks UK & Australia that focused primarily on hip hop, R&B, grime, garage, reggae, funk, soul and dance music. It was launched as part of MTV's digital boutique of music channels on July 1, 1999 in both the United Kingdom and in Ireland. MTV Base closed on 31 March 2022, and was replaced by MTV 90s. MK (channel)
MK was a mostly Afrikaans music channel, launched in mid-2005, as MK89, that is part of the DStv bouquet of satellite channels owned by MultiChoice/M-Net, based in South Africa. MK is for ''Musiek Kanaal'' (Music Channel) and 89 was the original channel number on DStv satellite decoders. When the channel number was changed to 324, the channel was renamed to MK. At the end of July 2013 DSTV cancelled the channel and opted to move it to its audio bouquet due to lack of viewers. MK maintained an active online presence on their YouTube Channel, Facebook Page and Website. Even though the channel does not feature exclusively Afrikaans music, it has seen a tremendous boost for the resurging Afrikaans music scene, especially "indie" type of music. Everything But The Girl
Everything but the Girl (occasionally referred to as EBTG) are an English musical duo formed in Kingston upon Hull in 1982, consisting of lead singer and occasional guitarist Tracey Thorn and guitarist, keyboardist, producer and singer Ben Watt. Tuks FM is the radio station of the University of Pretoria and one of South Africa's community broadcasters. It was one of the first community broadcasters in South Africa to be given an FM licence. Previously renowned for its alternative rock music offering, the station underwent a musical transformation, where its playlist was changed to reflect the student population. Tuks FM is a volunteer, campus station, meaning that it is completely operated by students, save for upper management. History The station was formed in 1980 and had its first transmission on 9 February 1981, where it only broadcast to the Cafeteria and launched with a live performance from David Kramer. South African Music Awards
The South African Music Awards (often simply the SAMAs) are the Recording Industry of South Africa's music industry awards, established in 1995. The ceremony is held annually, usually in late April or May, with the judging process starting in November of the previous year. The nominations are typically announced at the end of March. The winners receive a gold-plated statuette called a SAMA.
