''The Shipbuilders'' is a 1943 British drama film directed by John Baxter and starring Clive Brook, Morland Graham and Nell Ballantyne. The film is set in a Clyde shipyard in the build-up to the Second World War. It was made by British National Films and shot at Elstree Studios. It was based on the 1935 novel of the same name by George Blake. John Baxter (director)
John Philip Baxter (31 December 1896 – 21 January 1975) was a British filmmaker active from the 1930s to the late-1950s. During that time, he produced, wrote, or directed several films. He directed Deborah Kerr in her first leading role in ''Love on the Dole (film), Love on the Dole'' (1941), and was the producer-director for the musical-comedy films of Flanagan and Allen during World War II. Early life and career Baxter was born on 31 December 1896 in Kent. He worked as a theatrical agent and theater manager. He became an assistant director in 1932. He formed his own production company with his friend John Barter. He also acted in several films produced by Lance Comfort. Baxter played a major role in the foundation of National Film Finance Corporation in 1948. Geoffrey Hibbert
Geoffrey Hibbert (2 June 1922 – 3 February 1969) was an English stage, film and television actor. Biography He made his screen debut with the lead role in John Baxter's ''The Common Touch'' (1941) and appeared in two other Baxter films, ''Love on the Dole'' and ''The Shipbuilders''. After the war he appeared in supporting roles in films as well as many television performances. He was also active at the Players' Theatre in the 1950s and 60s, acting in, among other things, the musical revue "Child's Play" with all words by Sean Rafferty. John Emrys Whittaker Jones (22 September 1915 – 10 July 1972) was an English actor of Welsh heritage. After making his stage debut in Donald Wolfit's company in 1937, his film debut came in Powell and Pressburger's ''One of Our Aircraft Is Missing'' in 1942, and he began to develop a career in the British cinema of the 1940s. Patric Curwen (14 December 1884 – 31 May 1949) was a British stage and film actor. Biography Curwen, son of John Spencer Curwen of the music publishing company, and grandson of John Curwen, founder of the Tonic sol-fa system, was educated at Abbotsholme School in Derbyshire, then New College, Oxford. He studied acting under Rosina Filippi and started his career at the Haymarket Theatre in London in 1907, appearing in productions of ''The Lyons Mail'', '' Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde'' and '' The Bells'', among others. Bertram Wallis (22 February 1874 – 11 April 1952) was an English actor and singer known for his performances in plays, musical comedies and operettas in the early 20th century, first as leading men and then in character roles. He also later appeared in several film roles. Early years Wallis was born in London. He was the son of Frederick Augustus Wallis and Sarah Mary (née Williams). A huge man who stood almost 7 feet tall, he won the Westmorland Scholarship to study voice at the Royal Academy of Music, where he won the Parepa-Rosa gold medal and the Evill Prize. Gus McNaughton (29 July 1881 – 18 November 1969), also known as Augustus Le Clerq and Augustus Howard, was an English film actor. He appeared in 70 films between 1930 and 1947. He was born in London and died in Castor, Cambridgeshire. He is sometimes credited as Gus MacNaughton. He appeared on stage from 1899, as a juvenile comedian with the Fred Karno company, the influential British music hall troupe.
