The Sentimental Bloke (1961 Musical)
''The Sentimental Bloke'' is a 1961 Australian musical by Albert Arlen, Nancy Brown and Lloyd Thomson based on ''Songs of a Sentimental Bloke'' by C.J. Dennis. It is one of the most successful Australian musicals of the 20th century. The musical has also been adapted for television and ballet. Development Albert Arlen and Nancy Brown had worked on the musical since 1950. Initially they sought the involvement of George Johnston, who showed little interest. Later, the actor Lloyd Thomson was brought on board as writer. Arlen and Brown went to England in 1955 to promote the show. This was unsuccessful so they returned to Australia, borrowed some money, and self-produced the musical in an amateur production at Canberra's Albert Hall in March 1961. Albert Arlen
Albert Arlen AM (10 January 190524 March 1993) was a Turkish Australian pianist, composer, actor and playwright. He is best known for his musical ''The Sentimental Bloke'' (to the poetry of C. J. Dennis), the "Alamein Concerto", and his setting of Banjo Paterson's ''Clancy of the Overflow''. Biography Albert Aarons was born in Sydney in 1905 to Turkish immigrants. He was educated at Cleveland Street Public School and Crown Street High School. He studied at the New South Wales State Conservatorium (graduated in 1924) and the École Normale de Musique de Paris. He then worked in London where he played various roles in West End repertory productions, as well as writing his own musical compositions and plays such as ''The Son of the Grand Eunuch'' (January 1937). Riverside Theatres is a multi-venue performing arts centre located in the Central business district, CBD of Parramatta in the western suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. ''The Sentimental Bloke'' is an Australian musical with music by George Dreyfus and book and lyrics by Graeme Blundell. It is an adaptation of C. J. Dennis' ''The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke''. The musical premiered by the Melbourne Theatre Company at the Playhouse, Victorian Arts Centre on 12 December 1985. It featured John Jarratt as The Sentimental Bloke, Julie Mullins as Doreen, Michael Bishop as Ginger Mick, and Faye Bendrups as Rose. It was subsequently produced in Perth ( Western Australian Theatre Company, 1986), Darwin (State Theatre Company of Northern Territory, 1987) and Brisbane ( Royal Queensland Theatre Company, 1988). John Lanchbery
John Arthur Lanchbery OBE (15 May 1923 – 27 February 2003) was an English-Australian composer and conductor, famous for his ballet arrangements. He served as the Principal Conductor of the Royal Ballet from 1959 to 1972, Principal Conductor of the Australian Ballet from 1972 to 1977, and Musical Director of the American Ballet Theatre from 1978 to 1980. He continued to conduct regularly for the Royal Ballet until 2001. The Australian Ballet is the largest classical ballet company in Australia. It was founded by J. C. Anne Mary Phelan (2 August 1948 – 27 October 2019) was an Australian actress of stage and screen who appeared in many theatre, television and film productions as well as radio and voice-over. Alan Burke (18 November 1923 – 28 August 2007) was an Australian writer and film director and producer. His credits include the musical ''Lola Montez''. Graeme Blundell (born 7 August 1945) is an Australian actor, director, producer, writer, playwright, lyricist and biographer Early life Blundell was born on 7 April 1945 in Melbourne; he grew up in the suburb of Clifton Hill. Jill Perryman AM, MBE (born 30 May 1933) is an Australian former stage and screen actress and singer.
