''The Second Mate'' is a 1928 British silent adventure film directed by J. Steven Edwards and starring David Dunbar, Cecil Barry and Lorna Duveen. It was made at Isleworth Studios as a quota quickie. David Dunbar (actor)
David Dunbar (14 September 1886 – 7 November 1953) was an Australian film actor. Dunbar was a prominent actor in American and British silent films, particularly in westerns,Wooley p.19 but switched to playing more minor roles after the arrival of sound. In later years he appeared mostly in British-themed Hollywood films. He was one of the first film actors beginning his screen career with Pathe Freres, Paris in 1910. Previously he was an actor on the legitimate stage both in Australia, his homeland and in Britain. On 7 March 1926 his wife Blanche was killed in a car collision in the Hollywood Hills. He had one sister, Miriam Kathleen (Strachan) Dunbar who remained in Petersham, New South Wales. Miriam married William Thomas Strachan, the children of that marriage being Miriam Kathleen and William James Strachan. The Cinematograph Films Act of 1927 ('' 17 & 18 Geo. V'') was an act of the United Kingdom Parliament designed to stimulate the declining British film industry. It received Royal Assent on 20 December 1927 and came into force on 1 April 1928. Description The act introduced a requirement for British cinemas to show a quota of British films for a duration of 10 years. Its supporters believed that it would promote the emergence of a vertically integrated film industry, with production, distribution and exhibition infrastructure controlled by the same companies.
