''The Scrub Lady'', also known as ''Tillie the Scrub Lady'', is a 1917 American silent comedy short film produced by and starring Marie Dressler and distributed by Goldwyn Pictures. Bryan was a composer, lyricist and writer. He had helmed nearly all of Charles Chaplin's Mutual films. The newly created Goldwyn Pictures brought Bryan in to write ''The Scrub Lady''. Dressler portrayed Tillie in three other films, including the first full-length comedy, '' Tillie's Punctured Romance'' (1914), with Charles Chaplin and Mabel Normand, as well as ''Tillie's Tomato Surprise'' (1915) and '' Tillie Wakes Up'' (1917). Marie Dressler
Marie Dressler (born Leila Marie Koerber, November 9, 1868 – July 28, 1934) was a Canadian stage and screen actress, comedian, and early silent film and Depression-era film star. In 1914, she was in the first full-length film comedy. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1931. Leaving home at the age of 14, Dressler built a career on stage in traveling theatre troupes, where she learned to appreciate her talent in making people laugh. In 1892, she started a career on Broadway that lasted into the 1920s, performing comedic roles that allowed her to improvise to get laughs. From one of her successful Broadway roles, she played the titular role in the first full-length screen comedy, '' Tillie's Punctured Romance'' (1914), opposite Charlie Chaplin and Mabel Normand. Max Davidson (May 23, 1875 – September 4, 1950) was a German-American film actor known for his comedic Jewish persona during the silent film era. With a career spanning over thirty years, Davidson appeared in over 180 films. Career Born in Berlin to Jewish parents, Davidson emigrated to the United States in the 1890s where he began working in stock theater and vaudeville. He entered silent movies in 1912. He made a series of films featuring the character Izzy for Reliance Pictures Company in 1914. ''Tillie's Tomato Surprise'' is a 1915 screen sequel to the previous year's '' Tillie's Punctured Romance'' again starring Marie Dressler as Tillie. The film was produced by the Lubin Manufacturing Company, directed by Howell Hansel and written by Acton Davies. The supporting cast features Colin Campbell, Eleanor Fairbanks, Sarah McVicker and Clara Lambert.
