The Sands Of Kurobe
is a 1968 Japanese drama film directed by Kei Kumai. It was Japan's submission to the 41st Academy Awards for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but was not accepted as a nominee. Produced by its stars Toshiro Mifune and Yujiro Ishihara, the film's first run in cinemas lasted for a month, significantly longer than the week or ten days that films at that time usually ran in Japan. Kei Kumai
was a Japanese film director from Azumino, Nagano prefecture. After his studies in literature at Shinshu University, he began work as a director's assistant. He won the Directors Guild of Japan New Directors Award for his first film, '' Nihon rettō'', in 1965. His 1972 film '' Shinobu Kawa'' was entered into the 8th Moscow International Film Festival. His 1973 film ''Rise, Fair Sun'' was entered into the 24th Berlin International Film Festival. ''Sandakan No. 8'' received widespread acclaim for tackling the issue of a woman forced into prostitution in Borneo before the outbreak of World War II. Kinuyo Tanaka won the Best Actress Award at the 25th Berlin International Film Festival for her performance. The film was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 48th Academy Awards. Tappie Shimokawa
was a Japanese actor. He attended Musashino Art University, but withdrew before completing his degree. In 1964, he joined Bungakuza Theatre Company but left in 1977. He is well known for his role as Chōsan (Detective Tarō Nozaki) in the detective drama television series ''Taiyō ni Hoero!''. Japan has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since the inception of the award. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The Academy Award for Best International Feature Film was not created until 1956; however, between 1947 and 1955, the academy presented Honorary Awards to the best foreign language films released in the United States. This is a list of submissions to the 41st Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour non-English-speaking films produced outside the United States. The award is handed out annually, and is accepted by the winning film's director, although it is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole. Countries are invited by the Academy to submit their best films for competition according to strict rules, with only one film being accepted from each country. Hideaki Nitani
was a Japanese actor. Career Born in Kyoto Prefecture, Nitani attended Doshisha University but quit before graduating. He first worked as an announcer at Nagasaki Broadcasting Company, but in 1956 made his debut as an actor at Nikkatsu. Gaining the nickname "Dump Truck Guy" for his handsome, tough guy roles, he soon became a staple in Nikkatsu Action movies, often playing the second lead, but sometimes starring in his own films. He is probably best known abroad for his role in Seijun Suzuki's ''Tokyo Drifter''. Nitani left Nikkatsu in 1971 and moved to television, where he starred in the ''Tokusō Saizensen'' police detective series, which ran for ten years between 1977 and 1987. Nitani married the actress Yumi Shirakawa and their daughter, Yurie Nitani, is also an actress. He died of pneumonia on 7 January 2012, three weeks before his 82nd birthday.
