The Roland Robinson Literary Award
The Roland Robinson Literary Award was created in memory of the Australian poet, Roland Robinson (poet), Roland Robinson, who died in 1992. It was awarded from 1993 to 2008. The prize was run by the City of Lake Macquarie and was awarded to both poetry and short stories in alternating years. It had a first prize of A$500. Roland Robinson (poet)
Roland Edward Robinson OAM (12 June 1912 – 8 February 1992) was an Australian poet, writer and collector of Australian Aboriginal myths. Life and career Robinson was born in Balbriggan, Co, Dublin, Ireland in 1912. At the age of 9, in 1921 he was brought to Australia. After only a brief education he worked in various jobs, mainly in the bush as a roustabout, boundary-rider, railway fettler, fencer, dam-builder, gardener and as a lifelong love - a ballet dancer. Robinson's first published poetry appeared in ''Beyond the Grass-Tree Spears'' published in 1944. He served in the Australian Army. His love of the Australian landscape and everyday scenes were inspiration for his poetry. He was one of the most dedicated poets to the Jindyworobak Movement. As well as a writer and poet, Robinson was dance critic for ''The Sydney Morning Herald'' in the 1950s and 1960s. City Of Lake Macquarie
The City of Lake Macquarie is a local government area in Greater Newcastle and part of the Hunter Region in New South Wales, Australia. It was proclaimed a city from 7 September 1984. The area is situated adjacent to the city of Newcastle and is part of the Greater Newcastle Area. The city is approximately north of Sydney. One of its major tourist attractions is its lake, also named Lake Macquarie. The mayor of the City of Lake Macquarie Council is Councillor Kay Fraser, a member of the Labor Party. The Royal Australian Navy ship was granted the Right of Freedom of Entry to the City of Lake Macquarie on 9 August 1991. History The Shire of Lake Macquarie was proclaimed on 6 March 1906. Jean Kent (poet)
Jean Kent (born 1951) is an Australian poet. Education Jean Kent was educated at the Glennie Memorial School in Toowoomba and graduated from University of Queensland with Bachelor of Arts majoring in psychology. She has worked in vocational guidance, educational guidance of disabled children, counselling of students and staff in TAFE colleges and, most recently, teaching creative writing. Jean now lives on the New South Wales north coast, which is a feature in her verse, as well the memories and experiences formed in youth and childhood in South East Queensland. Literary career Kent has published stories in many of Australia's quality literary magazines such as Overland, Westerly, Outrider, Imago, Australian Short Stories and Meanjin as well as in the American-based Antiopodes.
