The Road To Home
''The Road to Home'' is a 2015 feature-length documentary about Benny Wenda, the West Papuan independence leader and Nobel Peace Prize nominee. Since his escape from an Indonesian prison in 2002, where he was held in isolation and tortured as a political prisoner, Benny has been an unceasing crusader on the international scene, campaigning to bring about an end to the suffering of his people at the hands of Indonesia's colonial regime. Background Granted political asylum in the UK in 2004, Wenda's freedom of movement was restricted in 2011 when, at the behest of the Indonesian government, Interpol issued a ‘Interpol notice, red notice’ putting him at extreme risk of extradition should he travel. The following year the ‘red notice’ was lifted after being deemed "predominantly political in nature". Benny Wenda
Benny Wenda is a West Papuan independence leader and Chairman of the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP). He is an international lobbyist for the independence of West Papua from Indonesia. He lives in exile in the United Kingdom. In 2003 he was granted political asylum by the British government following his escape from custody while on trial. He has acted as special representative of the Papuan people in the British Parliament, United Nations and European Parliament. In 2017 he was appointed as the chairman for the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP), a new organisation uniting the three main political organisations struggling for the independence of West Papua. In 2020, the ULMWP announced a new constitution and government-in-waiting for the Republic of West Papua, with Wenda serving as interim president. "Free Papua Movement" ( id, Organisasi Papua Merdeka, OPM, tpi, Fri Wes Papua Grup) is an umbrella term for the independence movement established during 1965 in the West Papuan or West New Guinea territory which is currently being administrated by Indonesia as the provinces of Papua and West Papua, also formerly known as Papua, Irian Jaya and West Irian. The movement consists of three elements: a disparate group of armed units each with limited territorial control with no single commander; several groups in the territory that conduct demonstrations and protests; and a small group of leaders based abroad that raise awareness of issues in the territory whilst striving for international support for independence. Oslo Freedom Forum (OFF) is a series of global conferences run by the New York-based non-profit Human Rights Foundation under the slogan "Challenging Power". OFF was founded in 2009 as a one-time event and has taken place annually ever since. Dominic Brown (born 1980) is an English independent documentary filmmaker, based in London. Film Projects His first production was an undercover documentary, Forgotten Bird of Paradise, released in 2009. It details the ongoing struggle for freedom being fought by the indigenous people in the Indonesian occupied province of West Papua. He produced, directed and filmed the documentary alone. It was shown at festivals including Raindance, and was awarded 'Best Documentary' at the 2011 Dam Short Film Festival, and 'Best Short Documentary' at the 2015 Davis International Film Festival, USA. In 2012, Brown's second documentary, La Badil (No Other Choice), was released. Set in the Moroccan controlled territory of Western Sahara, it tells the story of the struggle for self-determination of the indigenous Sahrawi people and the situation they've face since failed uprisings there in 2010.
