''The Riverine Grazier'' is an English language newspaper published in Hay, New South Wales from 1873. The paper absorbed the ''Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation'' in October 1902. History The first issue of ''The Riverine Grazier'' was on 29 October 1873. The paper was published every Wednesday and could be subscribed to for £1 per year. It contained agricultural information, news and advertisements for goods and services in the area. Its founder was John Andrew; it was purchased in 1888 by James Ashton M.L.C. (previously a compositor with the ''Hay Standard'' then a clerk with Cramsie, Bowden and Co.) and John Johnston O.B.E. (ca.1864 – 29 October 1939) who was previously an accountant with Cobb and Co. then branch manager for the Equitable Assurance Company, of New Zealand. Hay, New South Wales
Hay is a town in the western Riverina region of south western New South Wales, Australia. It is the administrative centre of Hay Shire local government area and the centre of a prosperous and productive agricultural district on the wide Hay Plains. Located approximately midway between Sydney and Adelaide at the junction of the Sturt, Cobb and Mid-Western Highways, Hay is an important regional and national transport node. The town itself is built beside the Murrumbidgee River, part of the Murray-Darling river system; Australia's largest. The main business district of Hay is situated on the north bank of the river. James Ashton (Australian Politician)
James Ashton (8 May 1864 – 6 August 1939) was an Australian politician. Born at Ashby near Geelong to coffee-roaster James Ashton and Mary Ann Kinsman Brittan, he attended Sandhurst Grammar School until he left at the age of ten to work in a printing office. He moved to Echuca at the age of thirteen and then to Hay. He spent the next period working as a station agent and then as a journalist and part-owner of the '' Riverine Grazier''. Although about his partner, John Johnston, this reference has much on Ashton. He sold his interest in 1892 and bought the ''Narrandera Argus''. On 6 March 1899 he married Helen Willis, with whom he had four sons. A Free Trader, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Hay in 1894 and re-elected in 1895. ''The Hay Standard'' was an English language newspaper published in Hay, New South Wales, from 1871 to 1900. It was the first newspaper published at Hay. The initial full title of the newspaper was ''The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude, Booligal, Wilcannia, Menindie, Bourke, &c.'', reflecting its wide catchment area incorporating townships and districts in a broad arc to the north and west of Hay on the Murrumbidgee, Lachlan and Darling rivers. History The first issue of ''The Hay Standard'' was on 9 August 1871. The earliest extant issue is No. 13, published on 1 November 1871. The newspaper was initially published every Wednesday and could be subscribed to for 7s 6d each quarter (postage added). Cobb And Co
Cobb & Co was the name used by many successful sometimes quite independent Australian coaching businesses. The first was established in 1853 by American Freeman Cobb and his partners. The name Cobb & Co grew to great prominence in the late 19th century, when it was carried by many stagecoaches carrying passengers and mail to various Australian goldfields, and later to many regional and remote areas of the Australian outback. The same name was used in New Zealand and Freeman Cobb used it in South Africa. Although the Queensland branch of the company made an effort to transition to automobiles in the early 20th century, high overhead costs and the growth of alternative transport options for mail, including rail and air, saw the final demise of Cobb & Co. The ''Riverina Times'' is an English language newspaper published in Hay, New South Wales, from November 1900 until 1902. The full title of the newspaper was ''Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation''. It was published by John Andrew (1828 - 1902), a publisher and newspaper-proprietor at Deniliquin and Hay from the 1860s. The ''Riverina Times'' was essentially a continuation of '' The Hay Standard'', first published at Hay in 1871. History In October 1900 John Andrew purchased ''The Hay Standard'' (of which he had been founding publisher in the early 1870s); he renamed the newspaper ''The Hay Standard, Riverina Times and Journal of Water Conservation'' and relocated the office from Lachlan Street to Alma Street.
