The Right That Failed
''The Right That Failed'' is a 1922 American silent melodrama film directed by Bayard Veiller. Based on a short story by John Phillips Marquand, the film stars Bert Lytell, Virginia Valli, and De Witt Jennings. It was released by Metro Pictures on February 20, 1922. It is not known whether the film currently survives. Plot As described in a film magazine, prize fighter Johnny Duffey (Lytell) falls in love with a young society woman Constance Talbot (Valli). When he breaks his right hand in a bout and is forced to rest for three months, Johnny goes to the fashionable resort Craigmoor to be near Constance. One of his hero-worshipers, a chauffeur, becomes his valet and tutor in correct social etiquette. Constances father (Harlan) recognizes Johnny but keeps his secret until Johnny whips Roy Van Twiller (McCullough), a cad who was attempting to expose him. Bayard Veiller
Bayard Veiller (January 2, 1869 – January 16, 1943) was an American playwright, screenwriter, producer and film director. He wrote for 32 films between 1915 and 1941. Biography He was born on January 2, 1869, in Brooklyn, New York to Philip Bayard Veiller. He was married to English actress Margaret Wycherly from 1901 to 1922; their son, Anthony Veiller, was also a screenwriter. Veiller first broke into Broadway theatre with ''The Primrose Path'', a play that he wrote and produced. It was a failure and left him broke, although it later served as the basis for the 1920 film, '' Burnt Wings''. His first success as a playwright was '' Within the Law'', a hit on Broadway in 1912-1913. It was later adapted as a movie five times. Veiller continued to write plays as he began screenwriting. Max Davidson
Max Davidson (May 23, 1875 – September 4, 1950) was a German-American film actor known for his comedic Jewish persona during the silent film era. With a career spanning over thirty years, Davidson appeared in over 180 films. Career Born in Berlin to Jewish parents, Davidson emigrated to the United States in the 1890s where he began working in stock theater and vaudeville. He entered silent movies in 1912. He made a series of films featuring the character Izzy for Reliance Pictures Company in 1914. Otis Harlan
Otis Harlan (December 29, 1865 – January 21, 1940) was an American actor and comedian. He voiced Happy, one of the Seven Dwarfs in the Disney animated film ''Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs''. Early years Harlan was born in Zanesville, Ohio in 1865. He married Nellie Harvey and had a daughter named Marion. Harlan was the uncle of the silent film era leading man, Kenneth Harlan. Career In 1893, he appeared in Victor Herbert's ''The Magic Knight''. He was playing in vaudeville shows by 1911, appearing in Irving Berlin's ragtime musicals. A lost film is a feature or short film that no longer exists in any studio archive, private collection, public archive or the U.S. Library of Congress. Conditions During most of the 20th century, U.S. copyright law required at least one copy of every American film to be deposited at the Library of Congress at the time of copyright registration, but the Librarian of Congress was not required to retain those copies: "Under the provisions of the act of March 4, 1909, authority is granted for the return to the claimant of copyright of such copyright deposits as are not required by the Library."
