''The Return of the Durutti Column'' is the debut studio album by English band The Durutti Column. It was released in January 1980, through record label Factory. Background The initial two thousand copies also included a flexi-disc single with two tracks by producer Martin Hannett: "First Aspect of the Same Thing" and "Second Aspect of the Same Thing". The original 3600 LP sleeves were made of coarse sandpaper (similar to the Situationist book Mémoires), designed to scratch LPs which were placed on either side of it. The sleeves were assembled by members of the bands and label-mates Joy Division and A Certain Ratio. A regular printed sleeve for later copies was designed by Steve Horsfall. Some later pressings featured a sixth untitled track on side two. The damaging to adjacent LPs led to the album frequently being placed separated from the rest, which may have been the idea for the cover. The Durutti Column are an English post-punk band formed in 1978 in Manchester, England.Strong, Martin C. Peter Saville (graphic Designer)
Peter Andrew Saville (born 9 October 1955) is an English art director and graphic designer. He came to prominence for the many record sleeves he designed for Factory Records, which he co-founded in 1978 alongside Tony Wilson and Alan Erasmus. Early life Peter Saville was born in Manchester, Lancashire, and attended St Ambrose College. He studied graphic design at Manchester Polytechnic from 1975 to 1978. Saville became involved in the music scene after meeting Tony Wilson, the journalist and broadcaster. The meeting resulted in Wilson commissioning the first Factory poster ( FAC 1). Saville was a partner in Factory Records along with Wilson, Martin Hannett, Rob Gretton and Alan Erasmus. Toby Toman
Toby Toman, is a drummer who played with various British bands including The Nosebleeds, Ludus, The Durutti Column, Blue Orchids, and Primal Scream, working often with German singer Nico, known for her role with The Velvet Underground, while she was living in Manchester, England through the 1980s. Biography Toman born Philip Tomanov, Wythenshawe, Manchester, one of four brothers. There he attended school with Ed Garrity and Pete Crooks, with whom he shared musical interests. These three formed Wild Ram, which evolved into Ed Banger and the Nosebleeds, shortly after guitarist Vini Reilly joined. Vincent Gerard "Vini" Reilly (born 4 August 1953) is an English musician and leader of the post-punk group the Durutti Column. He is known for his distinctively clean, fluid guitar style, which stood out from his punk-era contemporaries in its incorporation of jazz, folk, and classical elements. In addition to his work under that group, Reilly has also collaborated with artists such as Morrissey, John Cooper Clarke, Pauline Murray, Anne Clark, and others.
