The Remittance Woman
''The Remittance Woman'' is a 1923 American silent drama film directed by Wesley Ruggles and starring Ethel Clayton, Rockliffe Fellowes, and Mario Carillo. A remittance man (or woman) was one sent away from home (usually Britain) to avoid shame on the family. The following year a book of the same title appeared, by American pulp author Achmed Abdullah. Wesley Ruggles
Wesley Ruggles (June 11, 1889 – January 8, 1972) was an American film director. Life and work He was born in Los Angeles, California, younger brother of actor Charlie Ruggles. He began his career in 1915 as an actor, appearing in a dozen or so silent films, on occasion with Charlie Chaplin. In 1917, he turned his attention to directing, making more than 50 films—including a silent version of Edith Wharton's novel ''The Age of Innocence'' (1924)—before he won acclaim with '' Cimarron'' in 1931. The adaptation of Edna Ferber's novel '' Cimarron'', about homesteaders settling in the prairies of Oklahoma, was the first Western to win an Oscar as Best Picture. Etta Lee
Etta Lee (September 12, 1906 – October 27, 1956) was an American silent film actress, known for supporting roles. Early life Lee was born on September 12, 1906, in Kauai, Hawaii. Her father was a Chinese medical doctor and her mother was of French ancestry. She grew up in California and went on to get her degree in education at Occidental College in Los Angeles. Lee moved back to Hawaii to be a teacher, before returning to Los Angeles to begin her career as an actress. Career Lee's first film was '' A Tale of Two Worlds'' in 1921, where she played Ah Fah, a Chinese maid. She played another Chinese maid named Liu in the 1923 film '' The Remittance Woman'', a maid in ''The Untameable'' (1923), ''A Thief in Paradise'' (1925), ''The Trouble with Wives'' (1925), and '' International House'' (1933). A lost film is a feature or short film that no longer exists in any studio archive, private collection, public archive or the U.S. Library of Congress. Conditions During most of the 20th century, U.S. copyright law required at least one copy of every American film to be deposited at the Library of Congress at the time of copyright registration, but the Librarian of Congress was not required to retain those copies: "Under the provisions of the act of March 4, 1909, authority is granted for the return to the claimant of copyright of such copyright deposits as are not required by the Library." Toyo Fujita
Toyo Fujita (16 July 1893 – 25 July 1959) was a Japanese actor who worked in Hollywood from the late 1910s through the mid-1930s. Biography Toyo earned a reputation as a talented actor on the stage in Japan, and later moved to the United States, where he appeared in theatrical productions in Los Angeles and San Francisco. He later settled down in Los Angeles, where he owned and operated a theater in the city's Little Tokyo neighborhood. Apparently this is where he met Sessue Hayakawa, an actor he often worked with in Hollywood films. He told reporters he was fond of reading about pirates. Edward Kimball
Edward Marshall Kimball (June 26, 1859 – January 4, 1938) was an American actor of the silent era. He appeared in more than 60 films between 1912 and 1936. Like many older actors of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, he enjoyed a varied stage career on and off Broadway before entering the silent films. Kimball was born in Keokuk, Iowa and died in Hollywood, California. He was the father of actress Clara Kimball Young in whose films he sometimes appeared.
