The Red Squirrel
''The Red Squirrel'' ( es, La ardilla roja, links=no) is a 1993 Spanish drama film directed by Julio Médem, starring Emma Suárez, Nancho Novo and María Barranco. Plot Jota, a failed musician whose girlfriend has recently left him, is about to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge when a girl on a motorcycle, Sofía, crashes off it. Rushing to help her, he discovers she has lost her memory, even forgetting her name. After telling the paramedics and staff at the hospital that she is his girlfriend, he later tells her the same. He invents an entire identity for her, giving her the name Lisa, and a history of their relationship according to his own fantasies. With the hospital psychiatrist starting to become suspicious, he spirits her out of the hospital and away on a trip to the 'Ardilla Roja' campsite, which he claims they have been planning for some while. Julio Médem
Julio Medem Lafont (born 21 October 1958) is a Basque film director, producer, editor, and screenwriter. Biography Medem was born on 21 October 1958 in San Sebastián, Basque Country, Spain and showed an interest in movies since childhood, when he would take his father's Super 8 camera and shoot at night, while nobody was paying attention. After college graduation (where he earned degrees in Medicine and General Surgery) he worked as a film critic and later as a screenwriter, assistant director and editor. After a few shorts he directed his first full-length feature, ''Vacas'' ('Cows') for which he won a Goya Award. After this film he directed ''The Red Squirrel'' and ''Earth'', both receiving good reviews at Cannes. His next film, '' Lovers of the Arctic Circle'', has been compared to the works of Krzysztof Kieślowski. In 2002 was released his following film, ''Sex and Lucia''. Ramón Mariano Fernández Lera (1949–2022), better known as Chete Lera, was a Spanish actor. With a long on-screen career in addition to a stage career, he featured in films such as ''The Red Squirrel'', '' Secrets of the Heart'', '' Familia'', ''Barrio'', '' Open Your Eyes'', '' Flores de otro mundo'', and ''Full Moon''. Biography Ramón Mariano Fernández Lera was born in 1949 in A Estrada, Province of Pontevedra. He was raised for most of his childhood in Corcubión, and then moved to Madrid. Prior to acting he was an aeronautic engineer, pilot, bank teller and studied psychology. He began a career as a stage actor in the late 1970s, including his performance in the Eduardo Fuentes-directed stage play ''Cabaret Castizo'' (premiered in Madrid on 5 January 1993), portraying a sheriff making a parody out of authoritarian Madrid city councillor Ángel Matanzo; Matanzo's attempts to bring down the play eventually prompted his own sacking from the municipal government board.
