The Red Girl
''The Red Girl'' is a 1908 American black-and-white short silent Western film directed by D. W. Griffith for the American Mutoscope & Biograph Company. It stars Florence Lawrence and the cast includes Charles Inslee, George Gebhardt, D. W. Griffith, Mack Sennett and Linda Arvidson. Plot An Indian girl helps a Mexican woman who has stolen a bag of gold nuggets belonging to a girl miner. The Mexican woman seduces the Indian girl's husband and tortures her. She escapes and meets the posse looking for the thief. Her husband and the woman are escaping downstream in a canoe so the posse launch other canoes and give chase. A fight ensues with the canoes capsizing and the Mexican woman taken prisoner. The Indian girl's husband pleads with her to forgive him but she refuses and goes away with the girl miner. American Mutoscope & Biograph Company
The Biograph Company, also known as the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company, was a motion picture company founded in 1895 and active until 1916. It was the first company in the United States devoted entirely to film production and exhibition, and for two decades was one of the most prolific, releasing over 3000 short films and 12 feature films. During the height of silent film as a medium, Biograph was America's most prominent film studio and one of the most respected and influential studios worldwide, only rivaled by Germany's UFA, Sweden's Svensk Filmindustri and France's Pathé. Marion Sunshine
Marion Sunshine (born Mary Tunstall Ijames, May 15, 1894 – January 25, 1963) was an American actress and songwriter. During her youth she worked in many films and Broadway musicals, as well as vaudeville and variety shows. In the 1930s she was involved in the so-called "rhumba craze" and translated the lyrics of many Latin music songs. Life and career Sunshine was born in Louisville, Kentucky on May 15, 1894. After moving to New York City at a young age, she sang in Broadway musicals such as '' Going Up''. Between 1908 and 1916 she appeared on 26 films. In many of her performances she appeared with her sister Florence Tempest. Sunshine also worked as a vaudeville performer, and as a songwriter for Edward B. Marks. Harry Solter
Henry Lewis "Harry" Solter (November 19, 1873 – March 2, 1920) was an American silent film actor, screenwriter and director. Career Solter began his career as an actor in 1908 with Biograph Studios. That same year he met actress Florence Lawrence while making the film ''Romeo and Juliet'' for Vitagraph Studios and married on August 30 of that year. In 1909, Solter began working for Carl Laemmle's Independent Moving Pictures Co. of America (IMP) as an actor but also as a director. Over the next nine years, he directed 148 silent films. In 1912, Harry Solter and his wife established the Victor Studios in Fort Lee, New Jersey. In 1913, they sold out to Carl Laemmle whose amalgamation of several studios created the colossal Universal Film Manufacturing Co. Solter continued to direct for the new company until 1918 when health problems emerged.
