The Red Buttons Show
''The Red Buttons Show'' premiered on the CBS television network On October 14, 1952, and ran for two years on that network, then moved to NBC for the final 1954–55 season. Red's catch phrase from the show, "Strange things are happening!" entered the national vocabulary briefly in the mid-1950s. The series finished #11 for the 1952–1953 season in the Nielsen ratings and #12 in 1953–1954. Format The CBS run of the series featured monologues, dance numbers, and sketches with Red and the other series regulars. The characters played by Red included the boxer Rocky Buttons, the Kupkekin Kid, the Sad Sack, and Keeleforven. When the series was canceled by CBS, it moved to NBC which at first kept it as a variety show. When the ratings remained low the program was overhauled and turned into a sitcom with Red playing himself as a TV comic. Variety show, also known as variety arts or variety entertainment, is entertainment made up of a variety of acts including musical theatre, musical performances, sketch comedy, magic (illusion), magic, acrobatics, juggling, and ventriloquism. It is normally introduced by a Master of Ceremonies, compère (master of ceremonies) or Television presenter, host. The variety format made its way from the Victorian era stage in Britain and America to radio and then television. Patricia Ann Carroll (May 5, 1927 – July 30, 2022) was an American actress and comedian. She was known for voicing Ursula (The Little Mermaid), Ursula in ''The Little Mermaid (1989 film), The Little Mermaid'' and for appearances in CBS's ''The Danny Thomas Show'', American Broadcasting Company, ABC's ''Laverne & Shirley'', and NBC's ''ER (TV series), ER''. Nelson Case
Nelson Case (February 3, 1910 – March 23, 1976) was an American radio and television announcer. Case was the son of Walter and Ethel Case. His father was a newspaperman, and his mother was a driving force in the Long Beach Community Players. He attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School and first worked as an announcer on the school's radio station. One of his early ventures into entertainment came when "as a youngster in Long Beach, he sang and played the uke for a band called the Sunset Symphonic Six." He was a graduate of the College of William & Mary, in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he met his future wife. Although Case was best known for being an announcer on popular radio and television programs (in 1953, he was "on radio 20 times a week, on TV three" ), a 1941 newspaper article noted that he "covered everything from news and special events to sports."
