The Recoil (1924 Film)
''The Recoil'' is a 1924 American silent drama film directed by T. Hayes Hunter based on a Rex Beach story. Mahlon Hamilton and Betty Blythe star. Blythe filmed some scenes for the picture in Paris in November 1923. Plot As described in a film magazine review, Gordon Kent, an enormously wealthy American, comes from South America to paint Europe red with wild parties with beautiful women and where champagne flows from fountains. In Deauville he meets and loves Norma Selbee, a penniless American who rings herself in during one of Kent's lavish parties. They marry, but despite receiving showered attentions from her husband, Norma elopes with the wily adventurer Marchmont. William Sothern, Kent's famous detective friend, discloses that Marchmont is a crook, and that Norma's crook husband Jim Selbee is still alive. Goldwyn Pictures Corporation
Goldwyn Pictures Corporation was an American motion picture production company that operated from 1916 to 1924 when it was merged with two other production companies to form the major studio, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was founded on November 19, 1916, by Samuel Goldwyn, an executive at Lasky's Feature Play Company (later Paramount Pictures), and Broadway producer brothers Edgar and Archibald Selwyn, using an amalgamation of both last names to name the company. The studio proved moderately successful, but became most famous due to its iconic Leo the Lion trademark. Although Metro was the nominal survivor, the merged studio inherited Goldwyn's old facility in Culver City, California where it would remain until 1986. The merged studio also retained Goldwyn's Leo the Lion logo. Lee Shubert of The Shubert Organization was an investor in the company. ''White Shoulders'' is a lost 1931 American pre-Code comedy-drama film directed by Melville W. Brown and starring Mary Astor and Jack Holt, with major supporting roles by Ricardo Cortez and Sidney Toler. The film was produced and distributed by RKO Pictures. The screenplay by Jane Murfin and J. Walter Ruben was adapted from Rex Beach's short story, ''The Recoil''. The film touched on the topics of gold-digging, adultery, bigamy, gigolos, and theft. The rights to the story were optioned in late 1930, and the film went into production in March 1931. After approximately four weeks of filming, the film was screened in May. A remake of the 1924 silent film entitled '' The Recoil'', RKO released the film on June 6, 1931, and it did not perform well at the box office, making it yet another film by RKO to suffer a similar fate.
