The Rastafarians
The Rastafarians was a California-based reggae group founded by Jamaican natives Ras Binghi, Big Dread, Michael Ashley aka Haile Maskel (bass and lead vocals), Patrick Houchen aka Shaka (drums and lead vocals) and Californian Herb Daly (guitar) in Santa Cruz, California, Santa Cruz, California in 1980. Other members included Constantine "Vision" Walker who had previously worked with both Bob Marley and Rita Marley and noted MC Tony "Moses" Wright, who performed and toured with Michael Franti, Spearhead. Some members of the band had also worked with Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus. The ensemble released the critically acclaimed album ''"Orthodox"'' in 1981. Ras Michael
Michael George Henry OD (born 1943), better known as Ras Michael, is a Jamaican reggae singer and Nyabinghi specialist. He also performs under the name of Dadawah. Michael Franti (born April 21, 1966) is an American rapper, musician, poet, activist, documentarian, and singer-songwriter, known for his participation in many musical projects, most with a political and social emphasis, including the Beatnigs and the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. Reggae () is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. The term also denotes the modern popular music of Jamaica and its diaspora. A 1968 single by Toots and the Maytals, " Do the Reggay" was the first popular song to use the word "reggae", effectively naming the genre and introducing it to a global audience. Constantine "Vision" Walker, also known as "Vision" or "Dream" (born Constantine Antonio Walker, Jr., (born 19 October 1951, Jamaica) is a singer songwriter and musician. He was an original member of reggae group The Soulettes, with his cousin Rita Anderson (Marley) and Marlene "Precious" Gifford in the early 1960s, and was briefly a member of The Wailers along with Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh.
