The Ragpicker String Band
The Ragpicker String Band is a Memphis, Tennessee-based folk-blues trio consisting of Rich DelGrosso (mandolin), Mary Flower (guitar), and Martin Grosswendt (multiple instruments). They released their self-titled debut album in 2015 on Yellow Dog Records. The album was mixed by Stuart Sullivan at Wire Recording in Austin, Texas, and produced by Mark "Kaz" Kazanoff. It was nominated for Best Acoustic Album of the Year at the 2016 Blues Music Awards. Reviews Robert Christgau gave ''The Ragpicker String Band'' an A− grade, highlighting the band's cover of "Google Blues" and praising DelGrosso's mandolin playing. Blues Music
Blues is a music genre and musical form which originated in the Deep South of the United States around the 1860s. Blues incorporated spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads from the African-American culture. The blues form is ubiquitous in jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll, and is characterized by the call-and-response pattern (the blues scale and specific chord progressions) of which the twelve-bar blues is the most common. Mandolin
A mandolin ( it, mandolino ; literally "small mandola") is a stringed musical instrument in the lute family and is generally plucked with a pick. It most commonly has four courses of doubled strings tuned in unison, thus giving a total of 8 strings, although five (10 strings) and six (12 strings) course versions also exist. There are of course different types of strings that can be used, metal strings are the main ones since they are the cheapest and easiest to make. The courses are typically tuned in an interval of perfect fifths, with the same tuning as a violin (G3, D4, A4, E5). Mary Flower
Mary Flower is an American musician and music educator on the independent Yellow Dog Records label. A blues and ragtime fingerstyle guitarist and vocalist, she combines intricate syncopated Piedmont style fingerpicking with lap-slide guitar. In 2000 and 2003, Flower placed in the top three at the National Finger Style Guitar Championship, the only female to do this twice for guitar. She’s performed with Jorma Kaukonen, guitarist/songwriter Pat Donohue, Hot Rize founder Tim O’Brien, singer Mollie O'Brien, guitarist/songwriter Geoff Muldaur, and the Campbell Brothers. Stuart Sullivan (born March 13, 1960, in East Lansing, Michigan) is an American record producer and recording engineer, based in Austin, Texas, United States. He is founder, owner and engineer of Wire Recording in south central Austin where he has recorded and worked with talent including Paul Leary, Sublime, Butthole Surfers, Canvas and Meat Puppets. Early life Sullivan was born in Michigan but grew up in West Lafayette, Indiana. He attended Indiana University (1979–83) in Bloomington and earned a bachelor's degree from the Marketing and Advertising School of Business. Mark "Kaz" Kazanoff (born October 14, 1949, Northampton, Massachusetts, United States) is an American jazz and blues saxophonist, arranger, and record producer living in Austin, Texas. Kazanoff has been nominated for multiple awards in the category of Horn Instrumentals, including an Austin Music Award in 1988, a Grammy Award for Delbert McClinton's ''Live from Austin'' in 1989, numerous Blues Music Awards, and a Blues Foundation Award in 2016. The Blues Music Awards, formerly known as the W. C. Handy Awards (or "The Handys"), are awards presented by the Blues Foundation, a non-profit organization set up to foster blues heritage. Robert Thomas Christgau ( ; born April 18, 1942) is an American music journalist and essayist. The CKUA Radio Network is a Canadian donor-funded community radio network based in Edmonton, Alberta. Originally located on the campus of the University of Alberta in Edmonton (hence the UA of the call letters), it was the first public broadcaster in Canada when it began broadcasting in 1927.
