The Purple V
''The Purple V'' is a 1943 American war film directed by George Sherman and starring John Archer, Mary McLeod and Fritz Kortner. The ''Purple V'' marked German stage star Fritz Kortner's American film debut. Actors John Archer and Mary McLeod were borrowed from M-G-M for the production. Plot Royal Air Force flyer Jimmy Thorne ( John Archer) and pilot Roger (Peter Lawford) are returning from a night photo reconnaissance flight over Germany, Jimmy recognizes the area. He reveals he lived there 10 years earlier, when his father was American consul in the region. Encountering a German cargo aircraft, they shoot it down, but Jimmy is forced to parachute from his damaged aircraft so that Roger can get the important photos back to England. Jimmy lands near the wreck of the German aircraft, finding a dead German aviator, and takes his uniform. George Sherman
George Sherman (July 14, 1908 – March 15, 1991) was an American film director and producer of low-budget Western films. One obituary said his "credits rival in number those of anyone in the entertainment industry." Biography George Sherman was born in New York City on July 14, 1908. At age 14 he sailed aboard the SS ''Mongolia'' to Los Angeles, California, where he found work in the mail room at Warner Bros. studios via a film editor friend. Kurt Kreuger
Kurt Kreuger (July 23, 1916 – July 12, 2006) was a Swiss-reared German actor. Kreuger once was the third-most-requested male actor at 20th Century Fox. He starred with, among others, Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart. Life and career Kreuger was born in Michendorf near Potsdam, but he grew up in Switzerland (in St. Moritz). He attended the London School of Economics and enrolled in Columbia University (New York City) to study medicine, but he soon dropped out to pursue a career in acting. His father, a businessman, cut off his allowance after he embarked seriously on an acting career. In 1943, during the filming of ''Sahara'', Kreuger was almost killed in a dramatic scene because the director almost forgot to say "cut". ''Lord Jeff'' is a 1938 MGM film, set in England, starring Freddie Bartholomew as a spoiled orphan who has gotten mixed up with some crooks, but gets set straight by a stint in a mercantile marine vocational school for orphaned boys. Curtiss P-40 Warhawk
The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk is an American single-engined, single-seat, all-metal fighter and ground-attack aircraft that first flew in 1938. The P-40 design was a modification of the previous Curtiss P-36 Hawk which reduced development time and enabled a rapid entry into production and operational service. The Warhawk was used by most Allied powers during World War II, and remained in frontline service until the end of the war. Capelis XC-12
The Capelis XC-12 was a failed 1933 aircraft design that most notably was used as a Theatrical property, prop in the films ''Five Came Back'', ''Flying Tigers (film), The Flying Tigers'', ''The Falcon in Danger'', and ''Immortal Sergeant''. The aircraft featured unusual twin horizontal tail structures supported by three vertical tail surfaces. Construction and finishing methods involved using sheet metal screws which ultimately led to the abandoning of the project. Design and development The original design by Socrates H. Capelis was issued U. S. patent #1,745,600 in 1930. The patent comprised a modified application with a half-span dorsal wing mounted rearward on top of the cabin and two additional engines mounted on the wings. Leslie Vincent
Leslie Vincent (September 6, 1909 – February 1, 2001) was an American actor. Biography Born in 1909 as Leslie Fullard-Leo, Vincent grew up in Hawaii and graduated from Punahou School. During the 1930s, he lived in Shanghai for a year and then moved to England, where he worked on the stock exchange. He studied acting at the Royal Academy of London. He appeared in more than 30 films including '' Forever Amber'', ''Destry Rides Again'' and '' Paris Underground''. Vincent's family, the Fullard-Leo family, purchased the Palmyra Atoll (except for some minor islets) on August 19, 1922, for $70,000 from Henry Ernest Cooper, and established the Palmyra Copra Company. Frank Reicher (born Franz Reicher; December 2, 1875 – January 19, 1965) was a German-born American actor, director and producer. He is best known for playing Captain Englehorn in the 1933 film ''King Kong''. Michael Dyne
Michael Bradley Dyne (August 19, 1918 – May 17, 1989) was a British-American television and film screenwriter. He was also an actor, and wrote one stage play. Dyne was the son of sculptor Musgrave Bradley Dyne. He was born in London, educated in France and Switzerland. He became a writer and actor in Canada, then emigrated to the United States in 1938. Dyne played small parts in some Paramount and 20th Century-Fox films (such as the George IV of the United Kingdom, Prince of Wales in ''Kitty (1945 film), Kitty'' (1945)).
