The Prodigal Son (van Hemessen)
''The Prodigal Son'' is a 1536 Mannerism, Mannerist oil on oak panel painting by the Duchy of Brabant, Brabant painter Jan Sanders van Hemessen. It shows the New Testament parable of Parable of the Prodigal Son, the Prodigal Son and has been in the collections of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium since 1881. H. Bussers, L. The foreground of the composition shows the prodigal son during his days of high living in the company of prostitutes, music, wine and gambling. In the background through the open window one can discern a scene of the prodigal son living among the swine after he has fallen on hard times and the scene of his reunion with his father who forgives him. Jan Sanders van Hemessen (c. 1500 – c. 1566) was a leading Flemish Renaissance painter, belonging to the group of Italianizing Flemish painters called the Romanists, who were influenced by Italian Renaissance painting. Van Hemessen had visited Italy during the 1520s, and also Fontainebleau near Paris in the mid 1530s, where he was able to view the work of the colony of Italian artists known as the First School of Fontainebleau, who were working on the decorations for the Palace of Fontainebleau.Burr Wallen.
