The Prahran Telegraph
The ''Prahran Telegraph'' was a weekly newspaper published from 1860 to 1930 in Prahran, an inner-suburb of the city of Melbourne, Australia. No copy pre-1866 is known to have survived. From 1866 (or earlier) until December 1888, the paper was called the ''Telegraph and St Kilda, Prahran and South Yarra Guardian''. From January 1889 until 7 December 1902, the paper was known simply as the ''Prahran Telegraph''. From 13 December 1902 the banner head read the ''Prahran Telegraph, with which is incorporated the St Kilda Advertiser and the Malvern Argus''. The newspaper was probably started by Howard Spensley, who sold it within several years to William Osment. The preceding ''Prahran and St Kilda Advertiser'' was first published by John Hartley in 1857, and continued until at least 1861. Prahran (), also pronounced colloquially as Pran, is an inner suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 5 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Stonnington local government area. Prahran recorded a population of 12,203 at the 2021 census. Prahran is a part of Greater Melbourne, with many shops, restaurants and cafes. Chapel Street is a mix of upscale fashion boutiques and cafes. Greville Street, once the centre of the Melbourne's hippie community, has many cafés, bars, restaurants, bookstores, clothing shops and music shops. Prahran takes its name from Pur-ra-ran, a Boonwurrung word which was thought to mean "land partially surrounded by water". When naming began the suburbs spelling was intended to be Praharan and pronounced Pur-ra-ran, but a spelling mistake on a government form lead to the name Prahran. Brighton is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 11 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Bayside local government area. Brighton recorded a population of 23,252 at the 2021 census. Brighton is named after Brighton in England. History In England, on 29 August 1840, Henry Dendy (1800–81) purchased of Port Phillip land at £1 per acre, sight unseen, under the terms of the short-lived Special Survey regulations. Dendy arrived on 5 February 1841 to claim his land. The area was known as Dendy's Special Survey. The area Dendy was compelled to take, called "Waterville", was bound by the coastline to the west and the present day North Road, East Boundary Road and South Road. Windsor is an inner suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 5 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Cities of Port Phillip and Stonnington local government areas. South Yarra is an inner-city suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 4 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Cities of Melbourne and Stonnington local government areas. City Of Prahran
The City of Prahran was a local government area about southeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The city covered an area of , and existed from 1855 until 1994, when it was merged with the City of Malvern to create the City of Stonnington. History Prahran (/pɛ'ræn/) was incorporated as a municipal district on 24 April 1855, and became a borough on 1 October 1863, a town on 13 May 1870, and a city on 30 May 1879. On 22 June 1994, the City of Prahran was abolished, and along with the City of Malvern, was merged into the newly created City of Stonnington.
