''The Postman Didn't Ring'' is a 1942 American comedy film directed by Harold D. Schuster and written by Mortimer Braus. The film stars Richard Travis, Brenda Joyce, Spencer Charters, Stanley Andrews, William Bakewell and Emma Dunn. The film was released on July 3, 1942, by 20th Century Fox. Plot An old mail bag is discovered whilst cleaning out an attic containing letters postmarked 1889. Postal Inspector Brennon (Stanley Andrews) vows that he will hand-deliver the letters to the addressees or their descendants, and his decision has profound effects on a number of lives. Erville Alderson
Erville Alderson (September 11, 1882 – August 4, 1957) was an American character actor, usually portraying strong-willed or wise men. He appeared in nearly 200 films between 1918 and 1957. Life Alderson was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He married Lillian Worth, an American actress, on January 14, 1918 in Sydney, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. By 1925, the couple were divorced. Alderson's work in films included portraying Jefferson Davis as a young Army officer in ''Santa Fe Trail'' (1940). Alderson died in Glendale, California. Mary Servoss
Mary Servoss (June 2, 1888 – November 20, 1968) was an American stage and screen actress. Her main career was centered on the Broadway stage. She was born to Carlos A. Servoss and Mary (née Baker) in Chicago. She made her stage debut in 1905 in a stock company playing a small part in ''Lorna Doone''. In 1922, she played Portia to David Warfield's Shylock in ''The Merchant of Venice'', and she appeared in the 1929 play '' Street Scene'', in the 1931 play ''Counsellor-at-Law'' starring Paul Muni, and as Queen Gertrude in ''Hamlet'' opposite both Raymond Massey (1931) and Leslie Howard (1936). Ethel Griffies (born Ethel Woods; 26 April 1878 – 9 September 1975) was an English actress of stage, screen, and television. She is remembered for portraying the ornithologist Mrs. Bundy in Alfred Hitchcock's classic '' The Birds'' (1963). She appeared in stage roles in her native England and in the United States, and had featured roles in around 100 motion pictures. Griffies was one of the oldest working actors in the English-speaking theatre at the time of her death at 97 years old. She acted alongside such stars as May Whitty, Ellen Terry, and Anna Neagle.
