The Poor Simp
''The Poor Simp'' is a 1920 American silent film, silent comedy film directed by Victor Heerman and starring Owen Moore, Nell Craig, and Harry L. Rattenberry. Plot As described in a film magazine review, Melville G. Carruthers, a wealthy young man, is in love with Grace Adams. He plucks up enough courage to propose to her after knowing her for a long time, but makes a fiasco of it when the crucial time comes. Another admirer enters and monopolizes her attention. Strolling into the slums, Melville meets Sadie Kelly, gets into a rowdy fight, is bumped on the head, and his mind temporarily affected. Grace and her mother, being notified, hurry to his apartment only to find him having his head being gently bathed by Sadie. The two misunderstand the situation and leave indignantly. Victor Eugene Heerman (August 27, 1893 – November 3, 1977) was an English-American film director, screenwriter, and film producer.Vazzana, Eugene Michael (2001). ''Silent Film Necrology.'' Vera Lewis
Vera Lewis (June 10, 1873 – February 8, 1956) was an American film and stage actress, beginning in the silent film era. She appeared in more than 180 films between 1915 and 1947. She was married to actor Ralph Lewis. Biography She was born in Manhattan, where she began acting in stage productions. Her film career started in 1915 with the film '' Hypocrites'', which starred Myrtle Stedman and Courtenay Foote. From 1915 to 1929 she appeared in 63 silent films, including the film classic ''Intolerance'' (1916) where she played the "old maid" Miss Jenkins. Sir Douglas Julian Carter (5 August 1908 – 7 November 1988) was a New Zealand politician of the National Party. Biography Carter was born at Foxton in 1908, the son of Walter S. Carter. He received his education from Palmerston North and Waitaki Boys' High Schools. Afterwards, he was a farmer and active in various farming organisations. He was chairman of the New Zealand Pig Producers council, and was with the New Zealand Sharemilkers Employers Association, the Waikato Province Dairy Section of Federated Farmers, and was on the Waikato Primary Producers council. In 1936, Carter married Mavis Rose Miles. Carter represented the electorate from to 1975, when he retired. He was Minister of Agriculture under Keith Holyoake (1969–1972) and then John Marshall (1972), followed by Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries (New Zealand) (1972). Thomas Aloyisus Kennedy (July 15, 1885 – October 6, 1965) was an American actor known for his roles in Hollywood comedies from the silent days, with such producers as Mack Sennett and Hal Roach, mainly supporting lead comedians such as the Marx Brothers, W. C. Fields, Mabel Normand, Shemp Howard, Laurel and Hardy, and the Three Stooges. Kennedy also played dramatic roles as a supporting actor. Career For over 50 years, from 1915 to 1965, he appeared in over 320 films and television series, often uncredited. His first film was a short black and white comedy ''His Luckless Love''. He was in all nine Torchy Blane films as Gahagan, the poetry-spouting cop whose running line was, "What a day! What a day!" Lassie is a fictional female Rough Collie dog and is featured in a short story by Eric Knight that was later expanded to a full-length novel called ''Lassie Come-Home''. Knight's portrayal of Lassie bears some features in common with another fictional female collie of the same name, featured in the British writer Elizabeth Gaskell's 1859 short story "The Half Brothers". In "The Half Brothers", Lassie is loved only by her young master and guides the adults back to where two boys are lost in a snowstorm. Published in 1940, Knight's novel was filmed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1943 as ''Lassie Come Home'', with a dog named Pal playing Lassie.
