''The Phantom of the Forest'' is a 1926 American silent film, silent Western (genre), Western film, also classified as a Northern (genre), Northern. It is directed by Henry McCarty (writer), Henry McCarty and stars Thunder the Dog, Betty Francisco and Eddie Phillips (actor), Eddie Phillips. Produced by the independent film, independent Gotham Pictures, location shooting took place around the Redwood Forest in Santa Cruz County, California. The film was designed as a vehicle for Thunder, an Alsatian (dog), Alsatian who was featured in several films during the 1920s. It was released in Great Britain the same year by Stoll Pictures. Plot As described in a film magazine review, while a pup, Thunder runs wild in the forest, but becomes attached to Helen Taylor, who owns land that has oil prospects and is mortgaged. Henry McCarty (writer)
Henry McCarty (1882–1954) was an American screenwriter and film director. Gehring p.184 He was employed by several studios including Warner Brothers, RKO Pictures, RKO and Gotham Pictures in the silent film, silent and early sound eras. He directed eleven silent films between 1922 and 1926, generally for independent film, independent companies. Northern (genre)
The Northern or Northwestern is a genre in various arts that tell stories set primarily in the late 19th or early 20th century in the north of North America, primarily in western Canada but also in Alaska. It is similar to the Western genre, but many elements are different, as appropriate to its setting. It is common for the central character to be a Mountie instead of a cowboy or sheriff. Other common characters include fur trappers and traders, lumberjacks, prospectors, First Nations people, settlers, and townsfolk. International interest in the region and the genre was fuelled by the Klondike Gold Rush (1896–99) and subsequent works surrounding it, fiction and non-fiction. The genre was extremely popular in the interwar period of the 20th century. Northerns are still produced, but their popularity waned in the late 1950s.
