The Pell Street Mystery
''The Pell Street Mystery'' is a 1924 American silent action film directed by Joseph Franz and starring George Larkin, Frank Whitson, and Ollie Kirby. It is part of a series of films featuring Larkin as a New York City newspaper reporter. Plot As described in a film magazine, the police find Queenie Ross murdered. Tip O’Neil, a newspaper reporter, is detailed to solve the mystery. He finds a cuff link on the body and recollects returning a similar one to Count Verdaux, a gang leader. Dressed as a tango dancer, he gives an exhibition with Mazie, the Count's sweetheart. The gang is wise to Tip and goes for him. The lights go out and Tip escapes. He learns his sweetheart turned off the lights. Nell is brought to Ah Foo's rooms by a trick. Tip learns of her captivity goes to get her and a fight follows. Joseph J. Franz (October 12, 1883 – September 9, 1970) was an actor and film director during the silent film era in the United States. Franz was born in Utica, New York. He died in Los Angeles in 1970. He was sometimes credited as Joseph J. Tango
Tango is a partner dance and social dance that originated in the 1880s along the Río de la Plata, the natural border between Argentina and Uruguay. The tango was born in the impoverished port areas of these countries as the result of a combination of Rioplatense Candombe celebrations, Spanish-Cuban Habanera, and Argentine Milonga. The tango was frequently practiced in the brothels and bars of ports, where business owners employed bands to entertain their patrons. The tango then spread to the rest of the world. Rayart Pictures was one of the early film production and distribution companies operating independently of the major Hollywood studios in the United States during the later silent film era from the mid-to-late 1920s and into the early "talkies" era of early films with sound in the late 1920s and early 1930s. It established its own distribution network, specialising in westerns. It was begun by W. Ray Johnston in 1924, after whom the company was named. It was originally created as a low budget release agent, and like the other so-called Poverty Row studios, was based in a small plot off Sunset Strip, by Gower Street.
