The Patent Leather Kid
''The Patent Leather Kid'' is a 1927 American silent drama film about a self-centered boxer who performs a heroic act in World War I that severely wounds him. It was directed by Alfred Santell and stars Richard Barthelmess, Molly O'Day, Lawford Davidson, Matthew Betz and Arthur Stone. The film was adapted by Gerald C. Duffy (titles), Winifred Dunn, Casey Robinson (uncredited) and Adela Rogers St. Johns from the story by Rupert Hughes. Barthelmess was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. A copy of the film is held by the Library of Congress and a 16mm print exists at the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research. Alfred Santell
Alfred Allen Santell (1895–1981), was an American film director and film producer. Santell directed over 60 films, beginning in 1917, most of which were two-reel comedy short subjects for Hal Roach and other productions companies. Taking up feature films from about 1924, Santell worked for several major studios. In 1934, he was married to actress Jane N. Keithley; they remained married until her death. He left the business in 1947 after a contract dispute with Republic Studios. Santell died on June 19, 1981, in Salinas, California. Matthew Betz
Matthew Betz (September 13, 1881 – January 26, 1938) was an American film actor. Betz was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1881. Following an extended career in the U.S. Cavalry, Betz spent eight years in Vaudeville. His first stage play was ''Ellis Island''. He appeared in more than 120 films between 1914 and 1937. He died in 1938. Al Alleborn
Al Alleborn (1892–1968) was a Studio executive and 2nd unit director in Hollywood film production. Alleborn came to Hollywood initially as a stuntman. His first film was also one of the first Oscar nominees, 1928's ''The Patent Leather Kid''. He received an Academy Award nomination in the short-lived category of Best Assistant Director in 1933. He was an uncredited unit manager on Max Reinhardt's 1935 version of ''A Midsummer Night's Dream'', and headed up the unit production of ''The Adventures of Robin Hood'' three years later. Nigel De Brulier (born Francis George Packer; 8 August 1877 – 30 January 1948) was an English stage and film actor who began his career in the United Kingdom before relocating to the United States. Biography De Brulier was born in Frenchay, a suburb of Bristol on August 8, 1877 as Francis George Packer, the son of James Packer, a Gloucestershire coachman, and his wife Louisa Packer (née Field). De Brulier launched his career as an actor and singer on the stage in his native country and transferred to the American stage after moving to Canada and then to the United States in 1898. Lucien Prival (July 14, 1901 – June 3, 1994) was an American film actor. He appeared in more than 70 films between 1926 and 1953. Born in New York City, Prival was the son of a French mother and a Russian father. From 1912-1919 he lived with his family in Berlin. Hank Mann (born David William Lieberman, May 28, 1887 – November 25, 1971) was a Russian Empire-born and American comedian and silent screen star who was a member of the Keystone Cops. According to fellow actor and original member of the ensemble Edgar Kennedy, Mann was the originator of the idea for the Keystone Cops. Career Hank Mann was born in the Russian Empire but emigrated to New York City with his parents and siblings in 1891.
