The Palmolive Hour
''The Palmolive Hour'' is an American radio concert-variety program, sponsored by Palmolive Soap and broadcast on NBC from December 1927, to July 29, 1931. The Palmolive Musical Stock Company (aka the Palmolivers) offered a mix of jazz, show tunes and opera selections. Format and performers The program usually opened with a duet by Frank Munn and soprano Virginia Rea. To call attention to the sponsor's product, they did not appear on the program under their own names but instead were introduced each week as Paul Oliver and Olive Palmer. Contralto Elizabeth Lennox was featured in duets with Rea. Gus Haenschen led the orchestra, with Frank Black at the piano. Other regular members of the cast were Wilfred Glenn, Lewis James, James Melton, Elliot Shaw, and the Revelers Quartet. Cleo Mayfield
Cleo Empey (born Cleo Mayfield; August 6, 1898 – November 8, 1954) was an American actress and singer. Biography Mayfield was born on August 6, 1898, as Cleo Empey, the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence B. Empey in Hutchinson, Kansas. As a child, she attended the North Side school in Hutchinson, before moving with her family to Kansas City, Missouri at the age of twelve. Mayfield first met Cecil Lean in Chicago in 1912, during the production of ''The Military Girl'' at the Ziegfeld Theatre (Chicago), Ziegfeld Theatre. By 1913, she had assumed the stage name Cleo Mayfield. For the remainder of Lean's career, the two would frequently appear together in theatrical productions. ''The American Album of Familiar Music'' is a radio program of popular music broadcast from October 11, 1931, to June 20, 1954, first on NBC, then on ABC and then on local stations. Directed by James Haupt, the show was produced by Frank and Anne Hummert, better remembered today for creating '' Ma Perkins'' and numerous other soap operas. Sponsored by Bayer Aspirin, the show highlighted performances by a variety of vocalists, instrumentalists, and vocal groups. Alois Havrilla (July 6, 1891 - December 8, 1952) was an American radio announcer and singer. Early years Havrilla was born on July 6, 1891, in Pressov, Austria-Hungary, and came to the United States with his family when he was four years old. His father, John, was a pharmacist who brought his family to Bridgeport, Connecticut. Havrilla spoke no English when he arrived, and that condition continued as he attended a Bridgeport school in which classes were taught in his native language. As a little boy he sang folks songs of his native land at church parties and social events. He began to learn English at age seven, as John Baker, who was choir director at Bridgeport Trinity Church, taught him singing and speech. Claudia Muzio (7 February 1889 – 24 May 1936) was an Italian operatic soprano who enjoyed an international career during the early 20th century. Early years Claudina Emilia Maria Muzzio was born in Pavia, the daughter of Carlo Muzio, an operatic stage manager, whose engagements during her childhood took the family to opera houses around Italy as well as to Covent Garden in London and to the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Her mother was a choir singer, Giovanna Gavirati. The Revelers
The Revelers were an American quintet (four close harmony singers and a pianist) popular in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The Revelers' recordings of "Dinah (song), Dinah", "Ol' Man River, Old Man River", "Valencia (song), Valencia", "Baby Face (1926 song), Baby Face", "Blue Room (1926 song), Blue Room", "The Birth of the Blues", "When Yuba Plays the Rhumba on the Tuba", and many more, became popular in the United States and then Europe in the late 1920s. In August 1929, they appeared in the Netherlands with Richard Tauber at the Kurhaus, Scheveningen and the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. Cecil Worthington Starr Lean (July 7, 1878 – July 18, 1935) was a Canadian-American actor, lyricist, composer, and singer. Biography Cecil Lean was born in London, Ontario, the son of John Udie Lean. As a child, Lean moved with his father to Detroit, Michigan where he began his acting career at the age of 13. At age 19, Lean moved to Chicago, where he rose to prominence acting in a string of musical comedies at the La Salle Theater. Lean married actress Florence Holbrook in a ceremony at the Little Church Around The Corner in Manhattan on September 21, 1902. The two were widely known as "Lovey" and "Dovey" respectively, and the two made a pact to only perform together.
