The Owyhee Avalanche
The Owyhee Avalanche is a weekly newspaper in Homedale, Idaho, United States, which is published Wednesday mornings and serves the Owyhee County area of Southwestern Idaho. History Owyhee County has had many newspapers since J. L. Hardin and John and Joe Wasson printed the first issue of the Owyhee Avalanche. That was on August 19, 1865. That first Owyhee County newspaper was published in Ruby City. Two of the Avalanche publishers—the Wasson brothers—bought out Hardin, and, almost a year to the day after its beginning, the Wasson brothers had moved the plant to Owyhee County's boom town Silver City. On August 18, 1866, volume 2, number 1 of the Avalanche was published at the new location, with the Wassons as proprietors. But the Avalanche was not the first newspaper in Silver City. Homedale, Idaho
Homedale is a city in Owyhee County Idaho. The population was 2,633 at the time of the 2010 census. The town name was chosen by drawing names from a hat during a community picnic. Homedale is part of the Boise metropolitan area. It was, at one time, the terminus of a branch of the Oregon Short Line Railroad. History Homedale was first settled by Jacob Mussell in the late 19th century. In 1898 Jacob Mussell built a ferry boat to help settlers cross the Snake River making Homedale more accessible. By 1914 Homedale had a mayor, a council, a schoolhouse, and a railroad though it wouldn't be an official city until 1920. In 1914 Austrians were lured to Homedale and promised good farming ground. When they arrived in Homedale they found the land undeveloped though they still had to buy the land. Today there still is an Austrian Town in Homedale. Owyhee County ( ) is a county in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Idaho. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,133. The county seat is Murphy, and its largest city is Homedale. Silver City, Idaho
Silver City is a ghost town in northwestern Owyhee County, Idaho, United States, that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). At its height in the 1880s, it was a gold and silver mining town with a population of around 2,500 and approximately 75 businesses. Description Silver City served as county seat of Owyhee County from 1867 to 1934. Today, the town has about 70 standing buildings, all of which are privately owned.
