The Overnighters
''The Overnighters'' is a 2014 American documentary film written, directed, and produced by Jesse Moss. It premiered on January 18, 2014, as part of the U.S. Documentary Competition section of the Sundance Film Festival, and it won the festival's Special Jury Prize. The film also won a prize at the Miami International Film Festival, at which it was screened on March 13, 2014. After its premiere at Sundance, Drafthouse Films acquired the film's distribution rights. It was released on October 24, 2014, in United States, with a portion of all box office receipts being donated to affordable housing charities in North Dakota. Synopsis The film depicts the lives of people chasing the dream of high salaries in the North Dakota oil boom, only to discover that affordable housing is almost impossible to find. Jesse Moss (filmmaker)
Jesse Moss is an American documentary filmmaker and cinematographer known for his cinéma vérité style. His 2014 film, ''The Overnighters'', was shortlisted for best documentary feature at the Oscars. He has directed four independent, feature-length films, and three television documentaries and has produced 15 documentaries. Moss is a cinema lecturer at San Francisco State University and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and frequent collaborator Amanda McBaine and their two children. His office is in the Presidio, San Francisco. Early life Moss was born in San Francisco and raised in Palo Alto, California. His parents divorced when he was five. Though Moss never had any childhood aspirations toward filmmaking, his parents valued journalism. The Crested Butte Film Festival is a celebration of international films, held annually over four days in the last weekend of September, in Crested Butte, Colorado. History Michael and Jennifer Brody established the Crested Butte Film Festival in 2011, looking for creative work together following careers in filmmaking and education. Crested Butte previously had ''Reel Fest'', a shorts film festival that lasted ten years, but which was discontinued in 2010. The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is an annual international event dedicated to the theatrical exhibition of non-fiction cinema. The festival is a program of the Center for Documentary Studies, a non-profit, 501(c)(3) at Duke University. Finding Vivian Maier
''Finding Vivian Maier'' is a 2013 American documentary film about the photographer Vivian Maier, written, directed, and produced by John Maloof and Charlie Siskel, and executive produced by Jeff Garlin. Maier was a French-American woman who worked most of her life as a nanny and housekeeper to a multitude of Chicago families. She carried a camera everywhere she went, but Maier's photographic legacy was largely unknown during her lifetime. She died in 2009. The film documents how Maloof discovered her work and, after her death, uncovered her life through interviews with people who knew her. Maloof had purchased a box of photo negatives at a 2007 Chicago auction, then scanned the images and put them on the Internet.
