The Orlando Consort
The Orlando Consort is a British vocal consort which is best known for performing Renaissance choral music one voice to a part. The Consort was founded in 1988 as part of the activities of the Early Music Network of Great Britain, a forerunner of the NCEM, York. The four founding members were: * Robert Harre-Jones (countertenor) * Charles Daniels (tenor) * Angus Smith (tenor) * Donald Greig (baritone) The four current members are: * Matthew Venner - counter tenor * Mark Dobell - tenor * Angus Smith - tenor * Donald Greig - baritone The principal members are or were members of the Tallis Scholars, Gabrieli Consort or Taverner Consort. National Centre For Early Music
The National Centre for Early Music (NCEM) is organisation encourages, promotes and disseminates early music. Located in York, England, it is based in the converted and extended, Grade I listed medieval church of St Margaret, Walmgate. Each year, the NCEM organises the York Early Music Festival. Overview Designed by van Heyningen and Haward Architects, the centre was opened in April 2000. It was created, with the aid of a grant from the National Lottery and partnership money from organisations such as English Heritage. The buildings of the Centre include a performance space (in the former church) and facilities for conferences and other events and recordings. Historic keyboard instruments are available for hire. The church building, which had been redundant for some years, was upgraded to meet the needs of varying types and size of performance as well as many alternative uses such as teaching, conferences and exhibitions. Charles Daniels (tenor)
Charles Daniels is an English tenor, particularly noted for his performances of baroque music. He is a frequent soloist with The King's Consort, and has made over 25 recordings with the ensemble on the Hyperion label. Biography Born 1960 in Salisbury, Daniels attended the choir school at King's College, Cambridge where he was a chorister, then Winchester College for his secondary education. He returned to King's College for his university education, where he was a choral scholar, reading Natural Sciences and Music. After taking his degree, he studied under Edward Brooks at the Royal College of Music in London where he was awarded a Foundation Scholarship. His concert and recording repertoire extends from the Middle Ages to 20th-century composers such as Luigi Nono and Benjamin Britten. In December 2001, he was the tenor soloist in a performance of Wojciech Kilar's ''Missa pro pace'', performed in the Vatican in the presence of Pope John Paul II. Tallis Scholars
The Tallis Scholars is a British professional early music vocal ensemble normally consisting of two singers per part, with a core group of ten singers. They specialise in performing ''a cappella'' sacred vocal music. History The group was formed in 1973 by Peter Phillips, who in 1972-1975 was an organ scholar at St John's College, Oxford and studied music with David Wulstan and Denis Arnold. Phillips invited the members of chapel choirs from Oxford and Cambridge to form an amateur Renaissance vocal music ensemble, which turned professional after ten years of concert-giving. From the first performance in the Church of St. Mary Magdalen, Oxford on November 3, 1973, Phillips aimed to produce a distinctive sound, influenced by choirs he admired, in particular the renowned Clerkes of Oxenford, directed by David Wulstan. Taverner Consort
The Taverner Choir, Consort and Players is a British music ensemble which specialises in the performance of Early and Baroque music. The ensemble is made up of a Baroque orchestra (the Players), a vocal consort (the Consort) and a Choir. Performers place emphasis on a historically informed performance practice and players work with restored or replicated period instruments. The group is named after the 16th-century English composer John Taverner. History In 1973 the Taverner Choir, Consort and Players (TCCP) made their début at the Bath International Music Festival. The group was founded by Andrew Parrott at the suggestion of composer Sir Michael Tippett.
