''The Old Curiosity Shop'' is a 1911 American silent short drama film produced by the Thanhouser Company. The film is an adaptation of the 1841 novel '' The Old Curiosity Shop'' by Charles Dickens that was limited to the time constrictions of the single reel format. The film focuses on the grandfather who gambles into poverty and the consequences which eventually claim the life of Little Nell. Its survival and attribution as a Thanhouser film was noted by Kamilla Elliott in her 2003 book ''Rethinking the Novel/Film Debate'' under the title ''Little Nell''. In 2012, the work was confirmed to be a Thanhouser production at the Pordenone Silent Film Festival. The identification of the film as ''Little Nell'' arose due to head of the film having been lost. Barry O'Neil (September 24, 1865 – March 23, 1918) was a film director and writer. His real name was Thomas J. McCarthy. He directed several Thanhouser films including the production company's first two-reeler,https://www.thanhouser.org/TCOCD/Narrative_files/c2s9.htm/ ''Romeo and Juliet''. He went on to work for Lubin and then World Film Corporation. He was born in New York City. O'Neil married actress Nellie Walters. In 1913 O'Neil was elected to The Lambs as a non-resident member. He died of apoplexy. In 1910 and 1911 he filmed adaptations of a couple William Shakespeare plays. In 1915 he filmed a version of ''McTeague'' in Death Valley released as '' Life's Whirlpool''. Marguerite Snow (September 9, 1889 – February 17, 1958) was an American silent film and stage actress. In her early films she was billed as Margaret Snow. Early life Snow was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her father, Billy Snow, was a comedian and a minstrel, and the family lived in Savannah, Georgia. Her mother's maiden name was Lutz. After his death, her mother moved the family to Denver, Colorado. Snow attended Loretta Heights Academy and acted in local summer stock plays. While she lived in Denver, she studied acting. Career Snow became an actress at an early age and played many parts while still a child. Her stage career did not begin in earnest until she was sixteen years old. Her first engagement was with James O'Neill in a revival of ''The Count of Monte Cristo'', at the Crawford Theatre in Wichita, Kansas, on February 11, 1907. Essanay Studios
The Essanay Film Manufacturing Company was an early American motion picture studio. The studio was founded in 1907 in Chicago, and later developed an additional film lot in Niles Canyon, California. Its various stars included Francis X. Bushman, Gloria Swanson and studio co-owner, actor and director, Broncho Billy Anderson. It is probably best known today for its series of Charlie Chaplin comedies from 1915-1916. In the late 1916 it merged with other studios and stopped issuing films in the fall of 1918. According to film historian Steve Massa, Essanay is one of the important early studios, with comedies as a particular strength. Founding The studio was founded in 1907 in Chicago by George K.
