The O'Jays
The O'Jays are an American R&B group from Canton, Ohio, formed in 1958 and originally consisting of Eddie Levert, Walter Lee Williams, William Powell, Bobby Massey, and Bill Isles. The O'Jays made their first chart appearance with the minor hit "Lonely Drifter" in 1963, but reached their greatest level of success once Gamble & Huff, a team of producers and songwriters, signed them to their Philadelphia International label in 1972. With Gamble & Huff, the O'Jays (now a trio after the departure of Isles and Massey) emerged at the forefront of Philadelphia soul with " Back Stabbers" (1972), and topped the US ''Billboard'' Hot 100 the following year with "Love Train". Several other US R&B hits followed, and the O'Jays were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2013. Career The group was formed in Canton, Ohio, in 1958 while its members were attending Canton McKinley High School. ...

Survival (The O'Jays Album)
''Survival'' is a 1975 album by American R&B group The O'Jays, released on the Philadelphia International Records label. Reception Recorded at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia, and produced by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, ''Survival'' includes the R&B chart-topping single " Give the People What They Want" and "Let Me Make Love to You", which reached #10 on the same chart. ''Survival'' matched exactly the chart performance of its predecessor ''Ship Ahoy'', topping the R&B chart and peaking at #11 on the pop chart. According to AllMusic's Ron Wynn, ''Survival'' "followed the spectacular '' Back Stabbers'' and ''Ship Ahoy''" as a "good, but not on the same level" album featuring "many strong ballads and good message tracks". Wynn adds that, "while it may not have been as epic in its performances and compositions, it was certainly the other albums' equal in sales strength." ''The Village Voice'' critic Robert Christgau wrote more harshly of the LP: "Except for the astonishing 'Ri ...

Heartbreaker (The O'Jays Album)
''Heartbreaker'' is an album by the American R&B group the O'Jays. It was released in 1993 on EMI. The album peaked at No. 75 on the ''Billboard'' 200. Production Gerald Levert, Eddie Levert's son, cowrote and produced two of the album's songs. ''Heartbreaker'' was the first album with Nathaniel Best, who had replaced Sammy Strain. Critical reception AllMusic wrote that "many numbers aren't much different from the classic material that made them superstars in the '70s; that's both part of the music's charm and something that might trouble fans hoping the group would experiment with the vocal arrangements as well as the production." ''The Washington Post'' thought that the album "makes up in savvy arrangements what it lacks in well-crafted lyrics, but its real appeal lies in the still smooth Philly soul harmonies and ddieLevert's gritty testifying." The ''St. Petersburg Times The ''Tampa Bay Times'', previously named the ''St. Petersburg Times'' until 2011, is an American ...
