''The Nightshift'' is a Scottish overnight regional television programme broadcast on STV in Northern and Central Scotland. The overnight strand initially began as a local six-week pilot programme in the STV Central region on Thursday 22 April 2010, before launching a second edition for the STV North region on Tuesday 13 July 2010. The service, broadcast live every night from STV's transmission control centre at Pacific Quay in Glasgow, features highlights of archived STV programmes, reports from '' STV News at Six'', showbiz news items and archive aerial footage of Scotland, as well as texts & e-mails read out live on air by an out-of-vision presenter. STV (TV Channel)
STV is a Scottish free-to-air public broadcast television channel owned and operated by the STV Group. It is made up of the Central Scotland and Northern Scotland Channel 3 public broadcaster licences, formerly known as Scottish Television (now legally STV Central Ltd) and Grampian Television (now legally STV North Ltd) respectively. The STV brand refers to the on-air name used by Scottish Television for much of its history - notably in the 1970s and early 1980s. This brand remained in conversational use amongst the local public afterwards. The modern STV brand was adopted on Tuesday 30 May 2006 replacing both franchises' previous identities. The sense of continuity in the name was demonstrated when STV celebrated its 60th birthday in 2017, with special programmes broadcast on STV itself and the now defunct STV2. Scottish Television (now, legally, known as STV Central Limited) is the ITV network franchisee for Central Scotland. The channel — the largest of the three ITV franchises in Scotland — has been in operation since 31 August 1957 and is the second-oldest franchise holder in the UK that is still active (the oldest being Granada Television). Grampian Television
Grampian Television was the original name of the Channel 3 service for the north of Scotland founded in 1961 and now named STV. The northern region's coverage area includes the Northern Isles, Western Isles, Highlands (except Fort William and Lochaber) Grampian, Tayside (except the Kinross area), and parts of north Fife. Grampian went on the air on 30 September 1961. The company was bought out in 1997 by STV Group (the parent company of STV, the Channel 3 broadcaster in Central Scotland). The name ''Grampian Television'' was retired in 2006 and the channel is now known as ''STV'' on-air. STV Group plc (formerly known as Scottish Television plc, Scottish Media Group plc and SMG plc) is a media company based in Glasgow, Scotland. ITV Nightscreen
''ITV Nightscreen'' was a scheduled programme on the ITV television network, consisting of a sequence of animated pages of information about ITV's upcoming programmes, features and special events, with easy listening music in the background. The programme was used to fill the station's overnight downtime, where a closedown would have once been used at the end of programmes. The programme was generally shown 7 days a week with the typical weekday show airing from 4:05am – 5:05am daily. However, on ITV's digital channels, the amount of Teleshopping affects how much ''Nightscreen'' is broadcast. The programme was also broadcast on all of ITV's +1 channels. At Christmas and weekends, an additional 55 minutes was broadcast from 5:05am – 6am as no other programmes were shown. ''STV News'' is a Scottish news service produced by STV. The news department produces two regional services covering STV's Channel 3 franchise areas of Northern and Central Scotland. STV's news programmes are produced from studios in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen with reporters also based at newsrooms in Dundee and Inverness and political correspondents based at Holyrood and Westminster. Freelance correspondents and camera crews are based on the Orkney and Shetland Isles, Wick and Fort William with a permanent Western Isles correspondent based in Stornoway. Tam Cowan
Thomas Cowan (born 21 April 1969) is a Scottish football journalist and radio presenter who was previously also a television presenter. Early life He was educated at Braidhurst High School in Motherwell where he was one of the school captains. Career Cowan presented Scottish football comedy TV show '' Offside''. He has also taken to live stand-up comedy by taking "Offside" to the stage in 2002. The show was recorded live at the King's Theatre in Glasgow for DVD. In February 2010, Cowan presented '' It's Never Too Late'', a six-part documentary series for STV on literacy and numeracy difficulties among adults. Cowan was also a guest presenter for STV's overnight interactive strand '' The Nightshift'' and rejoined the station on 20 September 2011 as a main co-presenter for the lifestyle magazine show '' The Hour'', alongside Michelle McManus. Karen Dunbar
Karen Dunbar (born 1 April 1971) is a Scottish comedian, actress and writer. She first appeared on television on the BBC Scotland sketch comedy series ''Chewin' the Fat'' (1999–2002), and was subsequently given her own show by the channel titled ''The Karen Dunbar Show'' (2003–2006). Early life Dunbar was born in Glasgow and moved to Ayr at an early age. She attended Ayr Academy. Career ''Chewin' the Fat'' Dunbar began her career as a DJ and karaoke host before she attended The Comedy Unit's open auditions in 1997 where she was cast in the BBC Scotland comedy sketch show ''Chewin' the Fat.'' Colin Lamont (born 20 June 1956), better known by his shock jock on-air radio persona of Scottie McClue, is a broadcaster and former newscaster. Career Lamont was educated at Greenock Academy, the University of Glasgow, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) and Jordanhill College of Education, where he trained as a secondary school teacher. He started his career working as a trainee manager for the Clydesdale Bank before joining Scottish Opera in 1980. His roles including Touring Manager, Marketing Officer and Director of Education Programmes, working alongside directors John Cox and Graham Vick. Des McLean (comedian)
Des McLean is a Scottish stand-up comedian, actor, and a presenter for radio and television from Glasgow. Billy Connolly has cited McLean as his favourite comedian. Comedy McLean started working in comedy in 2000, and was a finalist in both the BBC New Comedy Awards and the Channel 4 programme '' So You Think You’re Funny?''. In 2002 McLean made his debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with his one-man show ''Des McLean 5 Stars'' and appeared on the BBC series ''Live Floor Show''.
