The Night Before Christmas (1933 Film)
''The Night Before Christmas'', also known as ''Santa's Toys'', is a 1933 American pre-Code animated short film produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by United Artists. Part of the ''Silly Symphony'' series, the film is an adaptation of Clement Clarke Moore's 1823 poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas", popularly called "The Night Before Christmas". The film was directed by Disney animator Wilfred Jackson. Plot In a loose adaptation of Clement C. Moore's famous poem, St. Nick is seen delivering the toys that he made in Disney's ''Santa's Workshop Santa's Workshop is the legendary workshop where Santa Claus and his elves are said to live and make the toys and presents given out at Christmas. Wilfred Jackson
Wilfred Jackson (January 24, 1906 – August 7, 1988) was an American animator, arranger, composer and director best known for his work on the ''Mickey Mouse'' and ''Silly Symphonies'' series of cartoons and the ''Night on Bald Mountain''/''Ave Maria'' segment of ''Fantasia'' from Walt Disney Productions. He was also instrumental in developing the system with which Disney added music and sound to ''Steamboat Willie'', the first ''Mickey Mouse'' cartoon. Several of the ''Silly Symphony'' shorts he directed, including ''The Old Mill'' (1937), won Academy Awards during the 1930s. Starting with ''Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'' in 1937, he directed sequences in many of the major Disney animated features up to ''Lady and the Tramp'' in 1955, including all of the animated sequences in ''Song of the South'' (1946). ''Silly Symphony'' is an American animation, animated series of 75 musical short films produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, Walt Disney Productions from 1929 to 1939. As the series name implies, the ''Silly Symphonies'' were originally intended as whimsical accompaniments to pieces of music. As such, the films usually did not feature continuing characters, unlike the ''Mickey Mouse (film series), Mickey Mouse'' shorts produced by Disney at the same time (exceptions to this include ''Three Little Pigs (film), Three Little Pigs'', ''The Tortoise and the Hare (film), The Tortoise and the Hare'', and ''Three Orphan Kittens'', which all had sequels). Motion pictures featuring Santa Claus constitute their own subgenre of the Christmas film genre. Early films of Santa revolve around similar simple plots of Santa's Christmas Eve visit to children. In 1897, in a short film called ''Santa Claus Filling Stockings'', Santa Claus is simply filling stockings from his pack of toys. Another film called ''Santa Claus and the Children'' was made in 1898.
