''The Ne'er-Do-Well'' is a 1923 American comedy silent film directed by Alfred E. Green. The film stars Thomas Meighan, Lila Lee, Gertrude Astor, John Miltern, Gus Weinberg, and Sidney Smith. The screenplay by Rex Beach and Louis Stevens is based on Rex Beach's 1911 novel of the same name. The film was released on April 29, 1923, by Paramount Pictures. This film is now considered lost. A previous version of the story was released in 1916. Plot Disgusted with his spendthrift son, Kirk Anthony's father has Kirk shanghaied and taken to Panama, where he attracts the attention of Mrs. Edith Cortlandt and falls in love with Chiquita, the daughter of a Panamanian general. He is able to get a railroad job through Edith's husband Stephen Cortlandt and decides to make something of himself when he meets Allen Allan, a Negro soldier of fortune. Cecil William Mercer (7 August 1885 – 5 March 1960), known by his pen name Dornford Yates, was an English writer and novelist whose novels and short stories, some humorous (the ''Berry'' books), some thrillers (the ''Chandos'' books), were best-sellers during the Interwar Period. Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of intertitle, title cards. Cyril Ring
Cyril Ring (December 5, 1892July 17, 1967) was an American film actor. He began his career in silent films in 1921. By the time of his final performance in 1951, he had appeared in over 350 films, nearly all of them in small and/or uncredited bit parts. Ring is probably best known today for his role as Harvey Yates, a con artist and accomplice to fellow con artist Penelope, played by Kay Francis in the Marx Brothers first film '' The Cocoanuts'' (1929). He also appeared in uncredited small parts in two other Marx films, '' Monkey Business'' (1931) and '' A Day at the Races'' (1937). Biography Born in Massachusetts, he was the brother of actress Blanche Ring and the first husband of actress/dancer Charlotte Greenwood (from 1915 to 1922; divorced). Born in Farmington, Connecticut, Cowles attended Yale and was a writer in addition to being an actor. George O'Brien (actor)
George O'Brien (April 19, 1899 – September 4, 1985) was an American actor, popular during the silent film era and into the talkie era of the 1930s, best known today as the lead actor in F. W. Murnau's 1927 film '' Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans''. Early life Born in San Francisco, California, George O'Brien was the oldest son of Daniel J. and Margaret L. (''née'' Donahue) O'Brien; O'Brien's father later became the Chief of Police for the City of San Francisco.
