"The National Pastime" is an original song introduced in the first episode of the first season of the musical TV series '' Smash'', entitled "Pilot". The song was written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, but in the show's universe, it was written by songwriting duo Tom Levitt (Christian Borle) and Julia Houston (Debra Messing) for their Marilyn Monroe musical '' Bombshell''. In the episode, Ivy Lynn (Megan Hilty) performs this baseball number, choreographed by director and choreographer Derek Wills (Jack Davenport), with a male ensemble in front of producer Eileen Rand (Anjelica Huston), Derek, Tom and Julia as an audition for Derek to see if Tom and Julia want to work with him. The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) is a membership organization dedicated to fostering the research and dissemination of the history and record of baseball primarily through the use of statistics. Established in Cooperstown, New York, on August 10, 1971, by sportswriter Bob Davids, it is based in Phoenix, Arizona. Its membership as of June 1, 2019, is 5,367. The songs include soulful jazz anthems and upbeat pop songs. ''Bombshell'' is the life story of Marilyn Monroe. It tells the story of the aspiring starlet who transforms herself into a worldwide sex symbol, including her early life and her alleged affair with American President John F. Kennedy. "Musical Chairs" is the twenty second episode of the American television series '' Smash''. It was written by Becky Mode and directed by Casey Nicholaw. The episode premiered on NBC on March 19, 2013, the seventh episode of Season 2. Karen, Tom, Julia and Derek adapt to a new environment. Pressure mounts at ''Liaisons''.
